I am considering switching my plan of building up a Baltimore and Ohio train to a C&O train, mainly due to the more readily available passenger cars.  I was going to repaint a 2343 Santa Fe into the B&O color scheme, but that would have required custom paint jobs on other passenger cars in order for them to actually match.  So, I am thinking about this locomotive (the Lionel 6-38144 set).  But, I will need two powerful locos for my cars.  Does anybody know if the shells for the C&O are directly compatible with the older F-3 shells and can "easily" be swapped?  I put easily in quotes, because I suspect it may take some modification to the frame to make it work.  But my question is, is it possible?  I prefer the overall pulling power of the 2343 and the magnatraction, especially with two lashed together.  I am looking for someone who has these two locos to let me know if the basic shell can more or less be placed on a 2343 frame.  I know I give up other stuff when I do that, but I run almost exclusively conventional and don't really need the bells and whistles (pun intended) of the newer stuff.  Thanks!

You may not realize it but the C&O units in your photo, and nearly everything Lionel has made since 1995 and with the exception of some LionChief units, will automatically fire up in conventional mode when power is applied.  There is no need to use their command control (TMCC, or Legacy) functionality if you don't want it.  This is true as long as the engines don't detect a command control radio signal when they power up.

If you prefer old-fashioned conventional control it's there.

To ensure that no radio signal is generated or detected do the following:

  1. If you presently have connected a Base -1, -1L, -2, or -3 simply turn off the power to it prior to powering up your engine.
  2. If you don't already have one of these then don't buy one of them.
  3. In either case just use a traditional transformer to provide conventional control.

I knew that, but thank you for the refresher.  What I needed was two powered A units and the set that I am looking at only has one and a dummy A.  So, I was going to swap shells onto an older 2343 and get magnatraction AND two powered units.  That is really the reason for the question.  I will just put the C&O A unit into something else that, where I might make more use of the other features.  I just mainly need the extra "umph", without purchasing another AA set.
