"Can you use other brand trucks on weaver cars in event something happens to the truck or coupler."

Weaver cars have a taller body bolster so other brands of 3 rail trucks don't screw right on, you'd have to grind some of the bolster off to lower the car to a reasonable height. Weaver cars are compatible with Athearn and similar 2 rail scale trucks however and those trucks can accept 3 rail wheel sets so they might be the easiest way to go if replacements trucks were needed....DaveB

I have a weaver Center flow hopper that has MTH trucks if I remember correctly I just had to make the hole a little bigger for the screw. now here's a question since I have never tried to put rolling stock together like this I bought a lot of weaver boxcars they have 2 rail wheel sets where do I pick up wheel sets for 3 rail

Northwest Short Line.

Check the Bay and the OGR Buy/Sell board. 2-railers frequently sell excess 3-rail wheel sets left over from conversions, or complete trucks. If you don't mind plastic trucks you can often buy them as cheap as the wheel sets. Note that the wheel sets for plastic trucks and metal trucks are not quite the same. The plastic-truck wheels are heavier and the axles are a bit too long for the metal frames. You can tell by looking; the wheels for the plastic trucks are cast and the ones for metal frames are stamped.

Trade with 2-railers or sell them on the Bay,

I've done the reverse process more than a few times selling off the 3-rail trucks for as much as 50% of what I paid for the entire car.

Weaver cars were built to NMRA recommended practice, which means the bolster height is compatible with any other scale truck built to same standards.    I have used Brass, All Nation, and Athearn trucks interchangeably on weaver cars.

Also that bolster height sets the underbody at the correct height to install body mount couplers per recommended practice.    You can just screw mount your Kadees directly to the underbody without shims and they are at the correct height.   I have replaced all the Weaver couplers I have with Kadees to insure more consistent operation.    It is hard to  uncouple weaver couplers from Kadees when switching.

I think Atlas 3 rail trucks will replace Weaver Trucks. Weaver uses a straight bolster with the separate three rail coupler mounted on top. This raises the car above prototype height. On the Atlas three rail truck the coupler bar is integral to the bolster but also raised so they should interchange.

I use Weaver three rail trucks on Atlas cars no problem and it brings them to the same height albeit higher than prototype.

Sadly Weaver was the only one(of the big 3-rail mfrs) to conform to the NMRA practice.  So Lionel, MTH, and Atlas trucks are not going to work without some irreversible modification.
