This is the flat car that fires 4 small missiles operated by a cam. After disassembly, there appears to have been foam padding that has completely decomposed. I think the purpose of the foam was to apply pressure so the triggers will snap into locking position. There is a good possibility someone has previously tried to fix or replace so I'm not sure what originally was used. Would anyone have a picture or link that shows the location of the foam or padding strip?

I have the same question Bill had with the foam strip.  I will try the weather stripping as suggested.

Can someone past a picture of the underneath side of the Firing Mechanism 44-15?  I think mine is complete but does not cock and release the way I think it should.  There is nothing sticking down for the Firing Cam 6544-7 to interact with to release the missile.

Help please.

CW - Thanks for the picture.  I bent the tab and was able to take the "Firing Mechanism 44-15" off the car.  In the attached picture, I marked where I think the foam should be located.  Are the tabs shown by the red arrows supposed to fall down when cocked?  It appears that these tabs must fall down so the Firing Cam can push them to release the Firing Mechanism.  If that is the case, I need to figure out why mine do not work properly.

I hope my description makes sense.  Is the foam that is missing the key to making this work properly?

Thanks

By the way, the tab that holds the launch mechanism down will get brittle and break off fairly easily. I suggest fitting everything back together and trying it without bending the tab (just hold it together).

As far as I know, individual parts were never available for the launcher. Just the entire mechanism. Last I looked, Lionel still had the modern era versions in black on their parts list.

I have to ask this question again about the foam.  Does it go on the low side or high side of the firing mechanism? And I don’t understand how the firing mechanism stays on the flatcar.  I have the 2 tabs. I vertical on the left side and I guess the other is a horizontal tab on the right side.  But they don’t seem to secure the firing Mechanism in place on the car.
