Quonset hut...

Could be a rather "uplifting" project

These structures used to be fairly common when I was a kid....now, you may see an

old rusty one on a farm or ranch....I think these arose during WWII, and didn't exist before.....what year? anybody know?  No chance they preceded 1940?

There a few Quonset Hut websites that I saw months ago.

I heard they were invented in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, which was a Navy Seabee camp.  The modern day version is a K-span, that the Air Force gets credit for.

My wife said, "Tell him to string some catenary so that hut appears to be under wire." Then she laughed.

Here's one that was converted to a movie theater over 50 years ago.  It still shows movies.  It's in the town of Monte Rio, CA.  Matt

I like that Monte Rio quonset theater....If there was a snowball's chance I had room for

it in any of my tiny towns, I'd build a model of it.

Just don't bump it too much you might deflate it..You did say it was a blimp hanger for N scale.

Clever Models has a Quonset Hut as well.  It comes in O Scale.

Great job!  I especially like that you installed the light over the door - it adds a nice touch.  I also like that you ran rails inside.  I'm curious as to what the building's use is.  Can you tell us a little more about it?

Thanks Mike,

It is used as a light repair shop for equipment and locos.  Has a pit inside and hardwood floors.  I need to add the roll up door but have too lazy to do so.  I also plan to add an Evans Designs welder and junk laying around as you would expect.

I have seen these types of building used by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Farms, and commercial buildings through out the State. In tornado alley these are popular!

Those wires turned out to be a very useful repurposed item. You are a good sport taking all the ribbing.

 

The hut looks good!

 

Shops are usually named...there's a dearth of names available due to the source of the materials used, but let's not go there again.
