Hello! I recently acquired a MTH CTA subway car set that is about 24 years old. It's a PS1 engine. This is my first ProtoSounds and MTH product. I have it hooked up to a Lionel LW transformer and a 5906 sound button. The sounds and lights work and the engine runs. The first time I ran it, it ran forwards and backwards.

Now, somehow, it will run in reverse and go in neutral. When I try to change direction it just sits there. It looks like the engine thinks it should be in forward but it doesn't go. If I put it back in reverse and apply throttle it takes off.

Since it does run and make sounds I know that the board is good and the motors are fine. I did open it up to see what battery it has in it and it has the original white battery in it so I already know that needs to be replaced and I have a BCR on the way.

Currently my plan is to just leave the thing alone until I get the BCR and then I'll give it another try but at the same time it's eating away at me that I can't make it run in forward.

I was hoping this group might have some suggestions/things for me to try. Thanks!

UPDATE: I couldn't resist messing with it again and I got it going forward at least for a little bit. I guess the E-unit on these things is fickle and I'm not holding the button down enough/long enough. IDK. I guess my track could be a problem too, I sent it around a curve and for some reason it stopped and now it's back in reverse. Sigh. Still looking for guidance.
