Yesterday I fired up my Williams GG1 converted to TMCC and RS 5.0. Forgot how loud this engine is. I replaced the original speaker with an upgraded one from Digital Dynamics. I know a lot of people may disagree but in my opinion RS 5.0 is far superior to what is being offered these days in Legacy engines.

Seems like the only Legacy sound feature worth anything if at all is the quilling whistle horn. Other than that the other sounds are mostly generic.

Correct me on this one. I thought the Lionel TMCC conversions are only up to Railsounds 4.0.

My understanding is that the only Railsounds 5.0 are available in the locos and not upgrades.

With regard to Legacy sound vs. Railsounds 5, there is no comparison in my opinion.

I have lots of Railsounds 5 locos and lots of Legacy locos. There is no Railsounds 5.0 loco that compares to Legacy. None.

It really depends on the engine and sound set. I have a Legacy diesel where the sound is pretty lame, likely due to an undersize speaker. Other Legacy engines sound great. Same for RS5 or even RS4. The newer 3rd Rail engines have RS4 but with good speakers and sound files they sound as good as Legacy even given their limited variety of sounds.

Trainman9,

Forum members can correct me if I am wrong but there is no such thing as Legacy Sounds. Legacy is the engine control system. Railsounds 5.0 are used in all the Legacy engines. Lionel does not sell Railsounds 5.0 to other manufacturers (Weaver, Atlas etc). They have been using Railsounds 4.0. From what I heard on some Atlas engines 4.0 still sounds darn good.

That's how I understand it to be as well.  Never have come across any TMCC upgrade kits that included RailSounds 5.0

John,

When I set up a engine on Legacy, Legacy appears in the control section with CAB-1, TMCC and then in the sounds section it says RS, RS 5.0 (no Legacy). I am not at my club so I cannot look at the CAB2 hand held but its in the INFO section.

   You maybe right.

Contrary to what several have posted my Williams Scale GG1 with the TMCC upgrade does indeed have Railsounds 5.0 as part of the upgrade. Lionel at one time did have some of the RS 5.0 sound sets available then they took them off the parts listing because some enterprising individuals were buying them up in large quantities.

I said in my original posting that it was my opinion the the original RS 5.0 is better than the sounds Lionel is currently providing in Legacy engines and I stick by that.

How many of you have complained about generic crew talk, tower com, eliminating the announcements specific to road name and engine number and the low volume of the Legacy sounds.

I stand by my opinion.

Well when you put it that way!

Can't argue your point with the emphasis being on recent releases. The loss of engine specific announcements was to accommodate sequence control. It's an individual choice as to whether that was a good trade or not.

The generic sound sets coming out in the steamers over the last nine months is definitely a big negative.

And volume is clearly lower as mentioned on the SF Northern and even more so on the new Mohawk.

I don't understand why Lionel is making these poor decisions but it is definitely putting at risk their reputation as being the leader and gold standard in train sounds.
