RailSounds 4E (Enhanced) is covered here in the annotated RailSounds history.

The functionality between 4 and 4E didn't change, but the Enhanced 4E chipsets had more memory, so that the sounds didn't suffer from as many artifacts of excessive compression... in other words, sound quality improved, with less background hiss and distortion.

RS4 and RS4E boards are identical, only the chipsets changed.

Thank You Gents for all your responses.  Helpful link TRW

I seem to remember (although I am not sure) that some RS 4 engines had the "unintelligible crew talk".  And some seemed to have "English" crew talk meaning you could tell what was being said.  Might have even had road number specific?  This was before RS5.

So, being able to make out the crew talk.....RS 4E ?

Dave

All unintelligible CrewTalk is 4/4E or earlier.

CrewTalk that you could actually understand didn't happen until RS5, when the memory size of the chipsets expanded again, and they're not backwards compatible in earlier boards. (Generally speaking, chipsets between RS2 and RS4/4E were interchangeable.)

You can tell what is a RS5/5.5 set-up as the number on the large PIC chips will start with RS50 or RS55, and the audio boards themselves are also slightly different due to added functionality.
