Hey all,
I finally received my $1 MP3 modules in the mail and decided to start playing around with them. Here is what I have so far.
What do you guys think? Not bad for $1.

Awesome! Did you record the bell sounds locally? And did you post a link to the $1 MP3 modules in a previous thread?
...more details please
Geopeg,
I believe the previous thread they came up in was one with my flasher circuit being an add on. GunrunnerJohn and Greg had suggested it.
Here are the MP3 modules:

Here are the SDcards:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64MB-1...p2057872.m2749.l2649
As for the crossing sounds,
I edited a few out of this video and did some trickery with the audio to make it continuous using Sony Vegas
Willy G,
What would you like to know? The crossings are from the now defunct company Right of Way Industries from Akron.
Best Regards,
James

I was curious if these were prerecorded.BTW links won't open. Your gate sounds sound great...i have been running edited sound clips through Audacity and run them from my laptop to a large bluetooth speaker.

I have those same crossings. Installed them a few weeks ago. Can't wait to see how your modules work with them. Please post the end result.

I'm sorry about that, here:

This should work
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64MB-1...-Card-Genuine-SDSDQ/
That is also an option. I am going to use this module and use a separate track activation device to short the switch on the module. Gonna have it up this weekend, gonna debug things and hopefully get it working and do a tutorial, or something. Audacity is also a great option! Thanks for the kind words.

luvindemtrains,
I have an obsession with crossings and these are my absolute favorites. I have over a dozen crossings and these are by far the best with detail and quality. I am still trying to find the highway crossings made by Right of Way Industries. It is a shame they are gone.
James
The gate sounds are great. I also have flashing circuit available and track activation, but I'm a a complete loss when it come to working with Mp3 players and such. If I sent you a SD card would you preform your trickery and copy bells sounds to my card? Also what capacity SD card would you suggest? Contact me by email in my profile and we can work out shipping details.
Gerry
He should be able to simply email the MP3 file to you, all you have to do is write it to the micro-SD card.
John,
How do I write file to the mini SD card?
Gerry
Here's what I use. Pop it into a USB port on a Windows or Mac machine and you can read/write the micro-SD card like a disk.
Transcend USB 3.0 SDHC / SDXC / microSDHC / SDXC Card Reader, TS-RDF5K
John,
Sounds easy. Also in searching for mini SD's I see reference to different classes. Would class 4 @8GB be appropriate for this type of project?
Gerry
What MP3 player do you have? It is very unlikely that is uses a mini SD card. I think you probably want a micro SD card. Mini SD cards do exist but are rare and I'm not sure they're even made anymore. The class rating amounts to the data speed which for audio (vs. say video) purposes can be anything so that's not an issue. 8GB is way more than you need for a crossing sound...that amounts to days of sound! Expect to spend less than $5 for the memory card - kind of comes down to the smallest/least expensive memory size sold from your preferred supplier (Amazon, eBay, your grocery store). I use 128MB (~0.1 GB) microSD cards which amounts to hours of sound and run $1-2 on eBay.

And in addition to letting us know exactly which MP3 player you have, how do you plan to activate the MP3 player?
Note that some MP3 players come with a data cable that plugs into a PC/laptop. This so-called mini-USB cable is used to charge the battery in some portable MP3 players as welll as transfer data into the microSD card. This may eliminate the need to buy a card reader as GRJ shows.
Thanks Stan, you and John continue to be a source for the those of us who have not of caught up to today's technology. The term "mini" was a typo. Both James and John were clear with their recommendations.

Stan, I plan to use the insulated rain method to activate relay contact closer to turn on the player like James' comment to "short" the switch to activate player.
I ordered the player listed above from Ebay which didn't come with cable. if battery was removed as James offered, I assume the player could be powered using the mini USB cable as well as to accomplish the audio transfer. We would also need to know the voltage requirements.
Gerry
