I have a session that I have recorded and been playing back this holiday season that runs a dozen trains. I just got my new Lehigh Valley hudson that was finally shipped and I would like it to be in the program.(I had to explain to the chief engineer that it was ordered two years ago). Let's assume that one of the engines in the program has an ID 30 and the new hudson has an ID 40. Here's the question; If I renumber the ID's of the engines, that is swap the ID's of the engines will that allow me to have the hudson work in the program without having to start over with recording? Of course the original ID 30 engine will be idled. From my understanding of the system, this might work. But I'd like to hear from others before trying it. Always trying to learn. George

I'd suggest that you give it a try - you'll know soon enough if it will work.
As I recall, the answer is "yes, it will."
Yes, it does work. The only issue would be in the recording is if you used an engine specific feature that the new engine does not use and it would simply ignore it and the playback would continue. You will be fine.
Thanks Gentlemen, I gathered from an earlier post and a response from Barry that the info for the program is in the TIU and nothing is in the engines, that this might work. I'm learning how to optimize programs as I go here. For example, I recorded this program with 15 engines involved. I then decided I liked it better with only 12 trains so I simply parked 3 of the trains on sidings and killed the power to those tracks. I'll try this ID change thing sometime, but I'm a little concerned with changing ID. We just had a thread going here talking about which TIU the engine is stored in, etc.
When the recording is made, you pick the TIU upon which the engines will be run, and DCS also asavesd the session in that TIU's memory as whatever Session # you designate. Further, only that TIU will save and issue commands to engines.
However, if you're recording in Super Mode, all TIUs save the session and can participate in its playback.

Thanks Barry, it is true that I'm recording in the Super Mode so I guess it won't matter which TIU the engine was loaded into when loaded into the system. I'll find out eventually.
I don't know for sure whether it's necessary or not (4 tiu in super mode) but if the engine I'm using to start the recording is sitting in tiu's #2s zone, that's the tiu I select for starting the recording? Side bar... it's amazing how accurate the record /Playback is for proto-2 engines. Not so much TMCC engines .

Gregg,

As I said, in Super TIU mode it doesn't make the least bit of difference what TIU you designate. All TIUs are included and all TIUs save the session.
Thanks Barry.
I don't know if this was caused in part by using a lashup ID or not
Yes, it was.
Lashups are operated by DCS by using their member engine DCS ID#'s, not the lashup DCS ID#.
Trial # 2--WALA it works! I guess I picked the worst case(lashup) for starters. I'm just lucky that way. I'm the Beta tester at work too! Thanks Barry for your help and knowledge of the DCS system. I really do appreciate all you've done to help us operators understand the system both here on line and with your books. George
George what you've accomplished running the recorded sessions sounds pretty cool. Do you have any videos of what the recording looks like?
On you tube I could only find one recorded session with two subway trains... I have a DCS system and trying to get some ideas (and still grasp the concept) of running multiple trains and using track switches etc for arecorded session.

Last year my mode of operation was to run my steamers at Christmas as a session 1 recording/playback. The chief engineer likes to see lots of trains running at one time, for the kids, so I run about a dozen trains. I have a session 2 that runs several engines and loads and unloads cars while moving around a yard area by throwing swithes. This was my first AIU experience. Then in the summer, I placed my diesels on the layout and made a session 3. Having discovered this new option, I plan to replace select steamers with diesels and run a mixture of engines. My only concern is that there are tracks with more than one train on them and I'll have to see if the speeds match. I don't have any videos of this. I did put some videos on my son's UTube site at jdonaldtrains showing some layout operations. The DCS system is a great way to run trains and has unlimited possibilities. George

Ok, here goes....I can't believe I am saying this, but..............
Buy the book! It is worth the price.
