I am laying track and wiring my first layout. I plan on operating in a conventional mode with 11 blocks. I will be using two zw transformers. Power to blocks 14 ga with 18 ga drops.

I plan on a control panel with mini switches. I plan on using a mini switch to operate a relay to supply power to blocks.

What relay is best?

Thanks

Automation Direct has some that I like. They are 15A, lighted, and have a test button. Lot of nice features. Base is a bit pricey but that is very nice also, has latch to hold relay with flat place for a label. Also available in quite a few different voltages and number of poles.

If the attached link above does not work go to:

Then go to:

Relays/Timers

Electro-Mechanical Relays

Square/Cube Relays

General Purpose, 15A (781 / 782 / 783 / 784 Series)

Last method is kinda convoluted, but for some reason I have been unable to make links to this site work here on the forum?

If you go the relay route, look into these low-cost relay modules you can get on eBay for less than $2 per relay - and that includes shipping cost (albeit from Asia).  Example of a 4-channel version (common types are 1, 2, 4 or 8 relays per module):

ogr 4 channel spdt relay module

They include screw terminals for the 10 Amp relay contacts.  The relays are controlled by low voltage (5V or 12V are common types).  The relay method has lower currents running behind your control panel thereby giving you more choices on switches as well as smaller gauge wiring for the often tight spaces.  The control voltage (e.g., 5V or 12V) can come from a DC wall-wart power adapter ($2-3) or derived from an accessory AC voltage with a few components.

I have a bunch of these in various voltages. I would use 24VDC ones. They are plug in with screw terminal sockets DPDT 10 amp contacts. Relay and socket at my cost is $8 each. You could do it with one 18 VAC supply and one bridge and capacitor.

Relay hookup for panels is described here
