Removeal of shell

I have a MTH 4-8-4 # 20-3044-1 that the shell has to come off. I need to replace the headlight bulb. Per the owners book I should just have to open the front of the boiler and pull the wires out and unplug it, however the wires are twisted with other wires, so I do not want to have more problems.
