Can anyone guide me on removing the shell on a lionel 6-9544 observation car , without damaging the shell.

Try searching for changing light bulbs on madison passenger cars. The windows are part of the car roof. There are two windows on each side that protrude into the window openings (i Forget which two), you need to squeeze all 4 windows in at the same time to get the roof off.
Best way I found is the grab both ends of the car with your palms on the roof and gently twist it back and forth like you are ringing out a dish towel. The wiggling motion usually works at loose enough to them gently pry out. I never had any luck just pressing the window tabs.
The 4 tabs that hold the roof/windows in place stick out in the window frames. Get 4 round toothpicks - find the first tab, and push it in slightly so you can wedge a toothpick in between the tab and the carbody. Do that for the other 3 tabs, then slide the roof assembly away from the car. The wooden toothpicks prevent scratching up the body or any paint there might be.
Attached is a PDF file with the Lionel instructions.
