Over the last few days I returned to the attic conversion I gave up on a few years ago.  Unfortunately the area got used for a junk catch-all in the interim.  I'm sure you can see that this isn't just a renovation of existing living space but a total transformation.  Dimensions of the usable space in the "T" shaped floor plan are roughly 30' X 24'.

The progress in the second picture isn't all that obvious but a lot of the sub flooring is now down, along with a raised section of floor at the rear.  Behind the camera is a smaller section of attic already floored, hip walled, wired and insulated.  I'm shooting towards getting everything roughed in and wired, then I can hook up the wiring to the mains.  One circuit alone is planned for layout power.

I also have a friend with a large attic O gauge layout.  The only negatives are the heat in the summer, the cold in the winter, and it's on the third floor.  Going up that many stairs does help keep you in shape.  And the stairway comes up in the middle of the room of an around the wall layout, so no duck unders.

Thanks for the extra shot of adrenalin guys.  Although I'm sure the end result will be well worth it, it never hurts to have more encouragement.  Bill T :  We recently had a steel roof put on the house and it dropped the summertime attic temperature dramatically.  The heat reflecting qualities helped keep the whole log bungalow structure cooler last year.  The fewer days I run an air conditioner the happier I am.  There are also 2 gable windows in the attic if fresh air or an A/C unit is needed.

Skylights are a future consideration if I find artificial light isn't enough.  The floor plan in fact has the stairs come up in the middle ( I'm standing at the top to take the pics ) and due to low headroom the layout design will be around the wall.  To accommodate these stairs I had to start from the bottom up, basically relocating the basement stairs 180* and building the new set above those.  That was fun!

Took the day off today as I slowly adjust to more and more physical activity.  But the hook is once again set.  I can't wait to reel in all this extra space.  I'll keep updating.
