I need to get a set of replacement batteries for one of my Cab-2 remotes. Is there a preferred brand or source for these batteries?
Thanks,

you talking about re-chargeable battery or regular battery.
regular batteries makes no difference I have found.
If you're just running normal AA's, pick any brand you want. Duracell seems to be one of the longer lasting brands.
If you're talking about rechargeables then I'm not sure, since my unit has not had the charger fix yet.
I spoke to the tech who repaired the charging circuit in my 990. He said Lionel recommends GP 2500 mAH rechargeables. I believe these are what it comes with these days. He also said that they've seen issues with other brands but didn't specify which.
I have 4 remotes and all have had the batteries replaced with the Energizer NiMH rechargeable batteries(The silver and green ones) and they work very well. Make sure they are NiMH. Regular AA batteries work just fine but you need to turn off the charging feature on the base or you will damage the handset and base. Flip the base over and ther is a switch on the underside neare the top right corner of the base
At one time mike suggested the green Radio Shack brand rechargeable batteries. I sent my CAB2 back to Lionel with some eneloop's rechargeables in it and got a nastygram from service. They said do not use them, no explanation though
I'm currently using Tenergy Centura Ni-Mh rechargables, and they charge and operate fine with the #990 or #993. I originally bought these for other uses, but when the Lionel supplied ones started to lose charge quickly, I tried them.
I got them at Radio Shack. NiMH type.

I had the Cab2 since day one and have used it every day. The GP 2500 batteries lasted until this past summer. I think I will use the site that Capt. Cog posted and order some replacements.

This must be a disease! My batteries in one my remote finally went the trip too. Geez, it's only had them in there since January 2008. My other remote was purchased the same time and those batteries are still charging. I'm not very good at keeping them charged either. The only reason I can think that these batteries failed was because I was showing my layout to one of my wife's friends last Friday (go figure). I do have some of the Energizer batteries and they fit into the remote okay so I may give them go. Appreciate the tip (link) Jeff on the original batteries if the Energizer ones do not work.
Everyone have a nice evening.
Ken.
