I believe I got my source from AMC Dave. Hopefully he'll chime in. Is much nicer speaker than I got with PS3 upgrade kit. Is a soundbar speaker
Thanks TEXASSP.
Dave, where are you?
It looks like you need a speaker for a early 5 volt system. The original type are impossible to find anywhere. And PS3 speakers are not recommended. MTH does have a substitute speaker available, but it is rated at 3 watts, not 5. BF 0000033. Is this for a road diesel or switcher?
UPDATE; I'll retract that information. you need the small version speaker for a switcher or GN 2-8-8-4. The above speaker will be too large. This is going to be even harder to find. Hope Dave can help you out.
You can use the 3W speaker, it'll work fine.
You can also try www.partsexpress.com A great resource for speaker replacements.
MTH list speaker BF-0000021. 16 ohm, 5 watt, 45mm diameter, 22 mm tall. Not available at this time. Maybe somebody has one.
These came in PS2 upgrade kits, no? I may have one, if so.
PS/2 kits have 4 ohm speakers.
This is for a 5V PS2 diesel, SW-8. Not a lot of room in that fuel tank.
I'm surprised it's 23mm high, I have a bunch of 4 ohm speakers in that size, but not any 16 ohm speakers.
I searched Amazon and found a 16 ohm speaker that might work. One of the reviews was from someone that used it as a replacement in a PS/2 engine.
Search using speaker 16ohms, factory buyouts
I searched GregM source. The problem is the 16 ohm speakers listed there the very max is 2 watts. The MTH ones they sell now are 3 watts. But still isn't the speaker NJCJOE needs.
A pair of these might work. Wire in series to get 16 ohms. It also doubles the power rating.

Joe - Those speakers on Amazon are a low profile but the diameter is a little too big. I need one too and cannot find one. Even the ones MTH say are their replacements don't fit.
Thanks Greg, but as Jim said, those speakers are two big in diameter and as Chuck stated, not the right voltage.
Norton, those you found are only 1W.
Joe, in series they would handle two watts. FWIW I believe the MTH amp is only 1 watt as is Lionel's. Two watts is plenty. For that price get some extras.

Joe, take a look at this speaker and also check some of the reviews. Hope it helps https://www.parts-express.com/...aker-16-ohm--289-131

That appears to be the same speaker as I found on Amazon, but for a much better price.
Steve, he's looking for a 45mm speaker, that one is too big. The RS-8 has a small tank for the speaker. FWIW, that one is a good choice for standard engines for replacing the MTH 16 ohm speaker, just not this one.
Joe, before you buy anything, lemme look through my stash....I’ve got a blue million new, never used MTH speakers....I might have that very speaker....I’ll look sometime today (Tuesday) ........Pat
The size will work, but I'm not sure about the 2 watt. Anybody know if that will work?
If you do a search on Lionel parts most of their speakers are in the .2 to .5 watt range. Fat Boy Speakers are 1 to 2 watt with only one speaker higher at 3 watts. The MTH BF-0000039 speaker is 45 mm, 3 watt but 4 ohm. I don't know if you could put a 12 ohm resistor in series with it to make it work or not. Never tried it. This is one for the electronic techs here. Maybe Gunrunner can pipe in.
From my understanding, the more resistors you add to a speaker the more degraded the sound quality is.

Wattage is really a non issue. MTH amps only put out 1 watt. Lionel is using baby fatboys in their "super bass" units. That should give you an idea of their power handling.
Pete
I've used the 16 Ohm Lionel Baby Fatboy in MTH engines that needed the smaller diameter. They are a bit smaller than the original, but worked out quite nicely.
Jim
If anyone has a source for these small Fat Boy speakers I would appreciate it. I have at least one MTH switcher I might try them on.
Thanks for any help.
Lionel has them:

I have two. I offered one to Joe if he wants it. I want to keep the other for a possible future repair. If not in a hurry I will order a couple with my next order. I have a repair that needs multiple parts but have been waiting several weeks for the customer to bring me the rest of the items I need for final testing. I try to keep repair prices and cost of shipping down by limiting orders unless absolutely needed. If I don't pay $12.00 for shipping for every repair it saves a lot over the long run. If I need a special order and have parts I know I will need down the road I can waive most or all of the shipping cost to the customer.
Forest.
Joe: You have e-mail. I sent the speaker a few minutes ago.
