Replacement Transistors for CW80

Why not open them up, read the numbers off the components in question, and look up the available replacements?

I have a similar CW-40 transformer with a probably-bad electronic component which I might ry to repair someday if I get ambitious.

Both transformers are open, CW's fuse is OK, with 18 VAC to PC board.

K-Line has a shorted output transitor, giving non-adjustable 18.6VAC output.

Componet number is (MRC .. BTA08 .. 600c .. C4 .. 18)

Have you eliminated the IC as the problem in the CW...

What do I check for on the IC in the CW?

The BTA08 in the K-Line is a Triac.  Will check at Rat Shack.

It's pretty much process of elimination.

Is there a replacement IC number for the CW?

triac are easy to come by.  for cw 80 follow the power through pcb, i have seen burned traces, open diodes, etc..  if you have power to ic, i think you are out of luck, since it has lionel programming.  g

Use the BTA 24 or BTA 26 it is a more robust part. In fact Lionel upgraded to it in the newer ones.

The IC is the microprocessor, Freescale MC68HC908JK3CP, but you will have to get Lionel to load the software in it for you.

Well the K-Line transformer is repaired.  All it needed was a $3.42 Triac.

The CW80 is still dead, there is no +5 volt at the check points.

Do you run conventional or command?

If you run command, strip that CW80 down to just its transformer and use it as a command "brick." Thats what I did. Its good for at least 8 amps.

Probably the regulator LM78L05.
