Got a nasty surprise upon opening this caboose for the first time. Smokestack was cracked, and smoke deflector was off. Was lucky to obtain replacement parts from Bill Harrison at SandW Parts in Niskyana NY. Doing the repair is another thing altogether. I cannot figure out how to get the broken stack out. Do I push it in, or pull it out? It turns slightly, but has zero give up or down. Any chance anyone else has done this repair and can provide guidance? Thanks. A few pix below. The stack looks chewed up in the later pix because I used a pair of needle nose pliers to try to turn it.

Top view looks like it has a Suethe unit in the stack but I don't see the rest of it on the inside?? Does the replacemant also include a new smoke unit? If so I would drill it out from the inside using a drill slightly smaller than the stack OD.
Pete
Pete it does have a Seuthe smoke unit, and I think the entire unit is contained inside the stack. And they’re not listed as in stock on Lionel Parts. So I’m reluctant to take that step. Replacement does not include new Seuthe. 30 (smoke deflector), 31 (smokestack), 32 (Seuthe unit)

The Suethe unit is just a tube with a couple of wires at the bottom that go to the regulator board, no? If so you should be able to push it out from the top using a tube that catches the OD of the unit. After its out then you should be able to drill out the stack. That unit doesn’t appear to have a flange at the top like most units.

Thx for the idea. Will give a try.
Mark, can you still turn ON the Seuthe unit? If so, try warming it up a bit and see if it gets loose. Then remove it like Pete said.
The stack may have tabs that will release once the smoke unit is removed. That's why I think it turns but does not lift out.

Yes I can turn it on and see if it heats up. Good thought.
Thanx for the tips, Pete and Dave. Heated it up for 5 minutes then was able to use a steel straw to push it through.
Were you able to remove the stack once the smoke unit was pushed out?

Yes, Dave, I was. Tested the smoke unit; it’s a low output wafting. Buttoned ‘er up, and, now, the smoke unit doesn’t work. Not gonna go through that again. I can do w/o the smoke. Thx for asking.
