that looks really nice!

is this something you are looking to sell for aftermarket upgrades?

After I drop the cruise M in mine, and do a little more testing, y’all will be able to just pull your Mubachi’s out, and just send me the motor and mount...then I’ll be able to install the Pittman and send it back as a bolt in swap......this will cover the Hudsons of course. The other models in this family, the K4, the Berk, and the Mikes will have to be case by case until I can get measurements for the flywheels and keep a record of that for future swaps......Pat

I know this is old. Is it possible to drop a Pittman in a kline scale k4 like the hudson?

I have not tried this swap in a K4, after I developed the above mentioned fix ( the small Pittman in the stock Kline chassis ) I further developed a full MTH chassis swap for both the Kline Hudson & the K4, …..the only reason I think I got away with the small Pittman in the Hudson was the flywheel was able to clear the shell because it sits up and in the sand dome which is hollow on the Hudson’s shell,….I do not know where that will land on the K4, ……if you plan on leaving the stock Kline’s electronics alone, and your model is not Kline Cruise equipped, then a flywheel is not 100% necessary, and a 8000 series Pittman should clear,……for comparison, the 8000 series Pittman I used in the above mod was just about the same length with out a flywheel on it, as the stock Mubachi is WITH the flywheel on it,…..therefore, if you remove the smoke box door ( boiler front ) you can gauge by looking into the boiler where the motor lives in your K4 ……all clear as mud right??…..😁

I’ll have a look in the smokebox. I’m more concerned about a new motor if and when this original dies it does have kline cruise.

Not a big deal. Just replace with an ERR Cruise M. The chuff in this engine uses a micro switch, not generated by the  K-Line Cruise board so a simple board swap is all that is needed. That can be done anytime before or after you swap motors.

Few people know this but the K-line cruise board is capable of providing chuffs. My K-line Hudson now has 4 chuffs per rev. It is not synched with the smoke of course. I did the mod many years ago and have forgotten exactly how it is done sadly but it was not difficult.

I hope you can figure out how its done. That could simplify replacing a blown up cruise board that has factory chuffs. Pretty sure a Cruise board from an upgrade kit doesn’t provide chuff signals by itself. Maybe something has to be jumpered to make this happen???

I could take apart my hudson and see what I did but I was hoping someone else knows the trick. An internet search came up empty but I know the answer is out there. I did not find how to do it myself.

If you have another cruise board you could just hook it up like the one in your tank engine, AFAIK all K-line cruise boards are the same. I believe was just a wiring change to convert mine to 4 chuffs.

Hi Pat, I know this thread is old and I also sent an email in your profile. I'm interested in having you fix up a Pittman motor to swap into my Kline K3270. I just got it on ebay and will be doing all of the other mods myself. Just posting here in case I end up in your spam folder! I'd prefer to go this route if possible instead of an entire chassis swap.

Thanks Frank
