I noticed that the cabooses issued in the late 80's and early 90's have reappeared in the new Lionel catalog on pages 88-89. They used to be advertised as semi-scale but have now been promoted to Standard O . I have no argument with this as I myself am a scale guy and have a half dozen of the earlier issues.

There are several styles in the series (6-177XX) including both wood and steel with variations. Since I try to stay in the 1930-1940 period, I always liked the simplicity of the markings in this series.

The description in the new catalog makes them sound exactly like the old ones. I'm assuming  they will have more features than that since they are priced identically to a "loaded" I-12 caboose on the same page.

I ordered the Santa Fe so I'll let you know.

Looking at the Santa Fe caboose I believe it to be similar to this one:

They are pretty common with some going for half the asking price of the one above.

The 1990 "semi scale" caboose was a die cast remake of the pre war scale/semi scale NYC 19000 class caboose. The 1990 remake was called semi scale because the trucks were placed outboard compared to the scale version like the semi scale pre war model. They are all close to scale size.

I am guessing the new release will be plastic and not die cast.
