Hi:

Just got an MTH RK-1111LP 0-8-0 with Proto at auction. Runs well. HOWEVER. When I power it up it has a consistant load humm. Volume pot does not affect it and the railsounds are garbled. On running the engine, the hum spodaically (once every 1 minute) goes away (once every 1 minute) and it works properly for a few seconds and then thge hum again. On the bench it just always hummmmms. Seems like some sort of short, but cannot seem to visually find it. Any ideas???? Any experiences?

Thanks

Marty,

Not likely to be a short circuit.  If it was you would most likely see smoke in addition to hearing the hum.

You apparently have a bad filter capacitor in the power supply inside the engine, or a bad speaker, or both.

If you're a tinkerer I would try an alternative speaker first, even one that won't fit inside just to see if the hum goes away.  If you do so it would help to use one with the same rating, i.e. 8 ohm going in, if 8 ohm coming out, or 16, if 16.

If it's a capacitor you'll need to be a major tinkerer to fix it, or you could send it to one of the talented repair techs we have here on the forum.

Mike
