Went to digikey websight. John or ggg or someone weigh in on this. What connectors are needed for me to make my own tether for my birkshire. I once had electric rail road put a new tether on my kline b6. Found one half of it but not the other half. It was soldered into the pcb board on the engine. Wish I had the other half I could of just used it. That engine has been needing an upgrade for a long time. What do you guys use for tethering the engine to the tender. So many at digikey I was not sure where to begin.

Somewhere I have the part numbers for the connectors that MTH uses for their ten pin tethers but that is not the issue. The issue is finding wire as flexible as what MTH or others use. You can find superflex wire, I have some of that too, but it is very pricey. Plus MTH tethers have a molded end. Not easy to duplicate. Your best bet is simply order Lionel or MTH tethers and rewire your engine to accept these. The "superflex" wire that Post war parts guys sell is not the same. Its fine for a single wire pickup roller but put ten of them into a .100" pitch connector and it will be very stiff and break after a few hours of running. Using heat shrink as a strain relief just makes it stiffer. BTDT.

For upgrades, I typically use the MTH 10-pin tethers. I've rolled my own a couple of times, but it's a lot of work. One way to crack the flexibility issue for the sheath is to use the braided cable cover. It's not quite as "neat" as the MTH tethers, but it works OK.
John I found my old tether that electric rr instaled in an old engine years ago. 1st pic in photos. I found the tether on my kline berk was bad. Though I could install this one myself. I am just not sure wich color from the molex conector that pluged into the tender pcb. Photo2 would go on the pcb of the engine plug board pic3. Thought I could just match the colors from the tender molex to the err tether male. thenfrom the err tether female to the pcb board in the engine. Long story short could you install this err tether for me.

You should be able to ring them out with a meter and find out where they go. Truthfully, since that locomotive has space for the 10-pin tether from MTH, that's the way I'd go. I have the tethers and the mating connectors for the locomotive. It'll be a lot neater lashup than with that big ugly tether you have.
Could i purchase them from you and can you exsplane how to install it. If you point out where the wires go. I might be able to install it my self. Thanks john
Hmm... I'm not sure I want to be trying to do this by remote control. Trying to do a blow-by-blow wiring for this is a bit more than I'm willing to try to do in the forum.
Could i then send it to you for install.
This is what I use:
The Tether connector Mouser part #s are:
6 pin connector shell part number:571-874562
Connector pin inserts part number 571-1021282 (Female)
Double row header part number 649-68691-172 (male) Cut to length needed.
Note the color coded sides on the connectors and wire number markers.
The wire is 24ga flex wire.
