Has anyone ever used any couplers from this company? I bought some a few months back from a looks standpoint. They REALLY are fantastic in detail. They even have "AAR" molded on the top part of the coupler. But in putting them together I noticed 2 problems. 1st,they're supposed to fit Kadee coupler boxes. I have a Kadee box from an old Weaver car. When I tried to put the coupler in the Kadee coupler box,I found the post in the coupler box&the round mounting hole on the coupler, are the same diameter. I opened the coupler hole up with a knife until I finally got the coupler to fit over the Kadee coupler post, but it wouldn't move side to side & I already had opened the mounting hole up enough to make it weak as far as pulling power. I thought I had an old,as far as model is concerned, coupler box,so I didn't give it much thought.

I purchased some new couplers from Protocraft later&they've got a scale coupler box of their own,so I thought the San Quan coupler would fit right over it-SAME PROBLEM!!!!

I also put the coupler parts together&found when the "pin" is "pulled" the coupler knuckle opens&the latch pin drops down,I think it even falls behind the knuckle, without being able to actually see what's going on inside. So you can't close the knuckle without raising the latch pin manually 1st. Even when you pull the pin back up&push the knucke closed, the pin won't fall into place.

I sent emails to San Quan about both problems&was told they'd look into the Kadee coupler box mounting problem. To date there's been no response. Regarding the inability to couple properly,I was told to be careful when trimming up the flash on all parts to make sure I didn't cut off something I shouldn't. The instructions included, only show the parts, there's no instructions or warnings to be careful regarding any parts,so you have to look them over carefully&do what you think.

I'm all new to O scale,so I could've trimmed something in the installation process I shouldn't have,but I don't have the slightest idea what it would've been.(?)

The couplers from Protocraft are expensive, but are all metal, are assembled&work flawlessly!!!

The only thing with these couplers is in their design. The "lightening holes," on the non knuckle side, come from another era of coupler evolution. They're not modern era.

So at present I have a modern era coupler that works VERY poorly or not at all&a coulper from another time period that works flawlessly. How about couplers for the modern diesel era&safety shelfs to go along with them? O scale hasn't addressed the modern era modeler yet.

I thought when I moved up to O scale,I'd have everything I had in HO,plus more because of the larger size&the ability to work in more prototypical detail-shame on me for not researching better.

Thanks to everyone in advance for your replies.

Nice looking but of no use as of now.

Bob,are those PSC couplers from Protocraft?

Since Bob's post states "PSC AAR couplers", I would assume he is indeed referring to Precision Scale Co. couplers and NOT Prototcraft, which is a completely different company.

Yes I saw that coupler also&thank you.

I came up to O scale when I saw the Protocraft coupler;well no,it was also for the size among other things, let's say when I saw the coupler with working "cut lever," that was the,"catalist," that finally got me seriously moving towards O scale.Kadee has a fine O scale coupler, but I want something more,as close to the prototype as possible.

Thank you,Alan

I have used some of San Juan couplers . very nice to look at but I don't think they would stand up to the weight of converted Lionel or the heavier Kline and atlas cars. Go to protocraft.com they have cast brass couplers with draft gear boxes that are very nice and can be operated with the coupler cut lever or with a magnetic wand. More expensive but very nice and robust. PS. they just came out with them assembled and ready to go with plastic or metal draft gear boxes.

Thank you Rick,I bought the new Protocraft couplers&agree with your comments 100%! They're REALLY nice to operate. The only thing I don't like about those couplers is the design on the non-knuckle side. They're molded to represent an earlier era or at least a different company's design, rather than the standard E coupler. I like the looks of the San Quan but I haven't been able to get them to operate prototypically yet. It seems if you can get the coupler to lock shut,it won't open with ease&if you get it to open,it won't close. I found out it won't fit inside a standard O Scale coupler draft gear box,but rather I believe the manufacturer said it takes a Kadee #806 box.

I wish Protocraft would come out with upper&lower safety shelfs for an E coupler, for us modern era modelers, though I do understand that most Proto 48 modelers, model from the late '50s through the early '60s.

It seems the majority of scale modelers, seem content to keep the "Lobster Claw" couplers. I started serious modeling in HO in the '70s&have seen that industry grow in so many areas over the last 30+ years. Kadee couplers became the standard coupler but Sergent came out with their coupler line&it is so real that I was ready to totally change over to them, before I got interested in O scale. But with the lack of rolling stock&scale couplers for the modern era,as well as ground throw switch stands with working targets on the 'stands,I'm looking at staying with HO as I don't have 30 years left to hope O scale will make enough additions I need for my modeling enjoyment to make the change over to my benefit.(?) I expected everything I had in HO,to be available in O Scale&in the case of rotating switch targets on switchstands,I figured O scale was large enough to make much more prototypical looking switchstands than were possible in HO,but was sadly disappointed. The size&detail from some manufactuers is what captivates me.

Thanks again,Rick.

Sincerely,Alan
