I was weighing out if this should go in the Tinplate section, since it's not really "Tinplate", but it doesn't seem to fit under the regular 3-Rail either.

Anyway, over the weekend I found a Schilling #700 Electric Train Set, complete and in the box. I didn't use the battery box that came with it, instead I just cycled some DC power from a power pack to the track and it ran great!

This is one of those trains that is just colorful, durable and overall a heck of a lot of fun!

I can't find much information on it online. Does anyone know about these sets? When were they out? Did Schilling make anything else?

There are not many variations to this set, mostly in the shape of the loop couplers and in some of the wheels on the cars are different.

I think the "made in Canada" thing came from the fact that some of the boxes have Canadian address on them. I think the sets were made in the USA, but the company had a Canadian distributor.

The major variation is that a very few of the tenders are light blue instead of the regular royal blue.

the battery boxes are red and blue and there seems to be a number of variations as to top color, body color and lever color.

There are two types of cardboard set box, with the earlier one being kraft/brown and the later one being gray, and the construction of the two boxes is different. The later gray box can be set up with the cover partially open for counter display.

The loco motors are rated for 6 volts, so don't turn your power pack up too high.

The plastic on the locomotive is brittle and they are often seen with chips on the cab corners and on the tabs where the two body halves are joined.
