Last week I bought Southern NS Heritage Legacy SD70ACE which was cataloged in 2010 (6-28344).  This is one of Lionel’s Fantasy models of the Heritage units.  I had multiple issues with it out of the box, but my dealer graciously allowed me to swamp it out for another one he had in his inventory.

One of the questions I had was adjusting the volume of the horn.  On the CAB2 the horn and crewtalk sounds don’t adjust when lowering the sound on key pad on the remote.  All the other sounds can be lowered except for the horn and crewtalk.  I was told by the dealer, in order to adjust the volume of the horn, you have to use the volume control knob on the engine itself.  My dealer said this was with all SD70ACe’s.  Is this correct for this engine?  On other Legacy diesels, is the horn and crewtalk volume adjustable via CAB2?  On my Legacy steam engines the whistle volume adjusts along with the other engine sounds via the keypad on the remote, so I was surprised when I could not adjust horn volume via the CAB2.

I read the engine’s operational manual, but it says the volume button on the keypad,  “Lowers the overall master volume of the LEGACY RailSounds sound system. To independently adjust the level of the background sounds only (e.g., diesel roar and

brakes), tap AUX1and then this key.”  However, this does not say anything about the volume of the Horn and Crewtalk being adjustable only by the volume control knob on the engine.

Thanks Nick.  At least I know that the sound on the engine is functioning correctly. However, I would be curious to know if horn and crewtalk on all Legacy diesels can only be adjusted via volume knob in the engine or if that pertains only to certain units?

The one I just purchased was manufactured several years ago.  Has that changed at all with the newest released Legacy diesel engines?  I wonder why Lionel did not make the horn and crewtalk volume adjustable on the CAB2?  It seems kind of cumbersome to adjust it on the engine itself.

Funny.  I just purchased the D&RWG SD70 and the smoke unit is also very loud.  To mitigate I simply turn up the sound volume.

My dealer exchanged my engine out this past week, but same problems still exist.  The main issue is with the cab light.  The cab light does not turn off when you start running engine.  Actually the cab light turns on brighter when I run it and I know it is supposed to turn off when you start running it, but it does not. I tried turning the cab light off on with the Cab2 but it does not turn off.

The smoke unit is very loud on mine unlike my other legacy engines.  Maybe eliminator smoke fluid would help...have to get some and try it out.  However, when I apply power to the track the smoke unit automatically comes on.  I thought the smoke unit was not supposed to come on until you started the engine on the CAB2?

I am also still unclear about the sound of the horn and crewtalk.  From what I understand you can’t adjust the horn or the crewtalk volume on the CAB2.  However, when I tried adjusting the volume on the volume control knob on the engine, the horn and crewtalk volume remain at the same volume?  Ken

I had problems originally with the sound cutting out on mine...sent back to lionel...seemed to have gotten that fixed...never originally tried the smoke unit...but  had problems with no smoke and loud fan...took apart myself with help from forum members and adjusted the wicking...now smokes but could not see how to get to fan bearings to oil...so now its just loud.  I do remember that when I had problems with the sound unit...the main volume switch on the motor had no effect on changing the volumes on the engine...seemed like there was a short somewhere in that the volume would decrease slightly when you touched it.  As I understand it, the volume switch will decrease crew talk and engines sounds together when you rotate it.

You can not lower just the "Crew Talk".  Those are part of the ancillary engine sounds.

The procedure for overall and ancillary volume control ...

Volume UP
Raises the overall master volume of the LEGACY RailSounds sound system. To independently adjust the level of the background sounds only (e.g., the
chuffing sounds and steam hiss), tap AUX1 and then this key.

Volume DOWN
Lowers the overall master volume of the LEGACY RailSounds sound system. To independently adjust the level of the background sounds only (e.g.,
chuffing sounds and steam hiss), tap AUX1 and then this key. Volume settings are retaining when track power is turned off.

When adjusting the overall volume, you'll hear a single bell hit that gets louder or softer with each volume adjustment. When the volume is at maximum, additional button presses have no effect and won't play the bell. When adjusting the background sounds (AUX1, then a volume key) you'll hear the volume change without a single bell hit.

The menu description is not clear, "over all volume", is the volume up or down pushed consecutively until you reach the desired level.

Background sounds are adjusted  by AUX1-up, AUX1-up AUX1-up or down accordingly.

The AUX1 button must be pressed each time prior to the volume button or it will go back to adjusting the overall volume level.

I suspect many folks that are unhappy with loco volume levels are confused by the way to access them via legacy, understandably so.

The Legacy should go to the scheme used my MTH, you can adjust the volume of individual elements in the menus with descriptions of what you're doing.

Personally I prefer the old Lionel volume adjustment, overall with the volume knob and background via the remote, like many things in life sometimes there can be "too much of a good thing".
