I'm new to the hobby as far as collecting/playing. I work for a guy who sells on eBay and does quite a bit of business, but I've never been into the hobby until recently after finding and stalking these forums for the past couple of weeks. I'm interested in starting to collect some and also sell online to help support the habit. If I have questions about cars and other things would it be okay to ask for help identifying or general knowledge about items? If not it's quite alright, I just wanted to get a feel of the community and say "hello!"

Welcome to the forum.

You will need to learn a lot about model trains in particular; as there is pre war(Lionel, Ives, Dorfan), post war(Lionel, KMT, American Flyer, Marx, Kusan), and modern era.

Then there is the modern stuff by; Lionel, K-Line, MTH, Weaver, Williams, Williams by Bachmann, and 3rd Rail Brass. There might be a few others that I don't know of but that should give you an idea of what you are getting into, not an easy thing to do if you are just starting out and trying to make a living selling on ebay or other auction sites.

While I am at it don't forget about the condition of an item.

Welcome to the forum.

This has been the most welcoming place online in terms of good people being willing to share what they know, often more than you might even ask.

I have attempted to return the kindness when someone posted about something which I felt I could lend sound experience or advise to I take the time to reply. You might consider doing the same.

If you are entering the buy/sell arena to support your hobby this forum's buy/sell section is an excellent and no fee means of do so, lots of trains change hands between this forums members as we all seem to have more trains than we need and want more trains than we have.

I wasn't aware of that section. Definitely going to be visiting. I'm not sure how informative I can be because I'm used to seeing ebay pricing but hey I'm always open for learning and helping

Please accept my apology, I didn't mean to be rude.

I don't think you were rude. As a relative newby, I feel like I risk taking advantage of forumers' vast knowledge by asking too many questions. It is a legitimate concern. You started with a positive comment that folks like to answer questions and that's a good approach, IMHO.

Welcome to the forum. This is the best place to go for O gauge train information of any kind. Great resource.

I have another take on the interpretation of comments here, a lot of times people post things trying to be helpful (I think we are all basically good people at heart and want to help others), but the written word comes off wrong and is mis-interpreted. Writing is more easily taken wrong than face to face conversations. So maybe at times someone might sound rude when they are actually just trying to offer some helpful advice and it just comes off wrong from the way it is written. I am just as guilty as anyone else, I have trouble expressing my thoughts in writing most of the time. Sometimes it comes out right, sometimes I goof it up. Just some food for thought here, for all of us.

There are a LOT of very nice and helpful folks here. I think most all of them are. Some  get into it over this and that and have dis-agreements, but I think everyone gets over it and goes on remaining friendly toward each another. Life is full of differing opinions and sometimes a few differing opinions is good to see. Gives us a much broader picture of what ever is being discussed. The moderators do a good job of weeding out the posts they think may cause problems. That helps keep us in line pretty well.
