Home Depot molding shelves. I had purchased some molding for the shelving unit and I saw my son pick up a O-Gauge car and use it as a track.

Snyder shelves in 8x12 space next to adjoining 13x25 layout, in process of 1997 upstairs [unfinished] layout dismantlement[Oct. '09]. Shelves remain, but wife now has former layout space as Exercise and TV Room. Triggered by our health-related move back to Greensboro Condo from Mountain retirement Cottage[its layout dismantled Mar. '08].
Beginning of a small unfinished round-the room 9x16 attic layout[ Feb.'10] down the hall to the left off the stairs.
I got some Glenn Snyder shelves because RailRax went out of business. They're a matt finished whereas the RailRax has a beautiful gloss aluminum finish. I placed them so that you don't see the difference. They're only 5 shelves out of about 45.
I found out to my dismay that that by placing the engines on the RailRax rails that they destroyed my traction tires. I have moved them off of the rails, and they sit right behind the front rails. The Glenn Snyder ones should be ok primarily because I don't have traction tires on them.

It is great to learn from others’ trials and errors. You helped me decide to make my own and save the traction tires. Thank you.
Here's my start, I haven't progressed to the actual train room yet, that's next. These are in the stairway going down to the basement, Glenn Snyder shelves.
Made my own cutting groves for the wheels. Also bought some grocery store shelving holders and made my own labels. On the back of each label I also write any notes about the engine such as did I already replace it with a BCR.
Just built mine a few weeks ago along the table. I have yet to put in the plexiglass doors (I used a table saw to create two "tracks" in the outside pieces to allow for sliding doors.
I make all my shelving out of 1x4 with a notch cut on the table saw for the wheels to set in. Keeps them safe on the shelf and easy to move to dust.
Back wall of garage and the other is a 7 foot wall with a 9 foot ceiling. All are made from 1x4 x8 foot wood from Lowes and stained them. Very sturdy, saved a load of money building the shelving units. I am out of space for the time until the other half gives me the ok to expand.
I made this shelving unit out of oak. There are grooves cut into it for the flanges to set in.
Due to limited wall space, I built this cabinet that fits under the layout.
I cut grooves into the bottom of each drawer
Each drawer can hold up to 28 cars, depending on car lengths. I can put two 18" passenger cars end-to-end on each "track"
