Coach Joe made a comment this morning in another thread and mentioned that  "I appreciate the colors of railroading even when it comes to steamers, only 1/3 of my steamers wear drab utilitarian black."

That's an interesting observation so let's post our 'Colorful' locomotives here for everyone.  I guess we should include some of these new 'fantasy schemes' that have been popping up lately from the various shops and clubs as well.

Here's my B&O President Harrison and American Flyer Southern mikado 4501 in green to start

Nice thread C Sam.  I never thought of starting one like this.  I'll have to get som better pictures but here's a few to start.

IMG_1186Three different NYC streamlined Hudsons  I don't consider Silver and Black to be drab although the dark gray of the Commodore is on the border.IMG_1188

A green Southern Pacific, a blue Wabash Hudson and a Williams version AT&SF Blue Goose "J" Northern.IMG_1190

A black and Orange "General" and a colorful K-Line Anheuser Busch Pacific in the back.IMG_1191

Some Great Northern green

IMG_1266Santa red!IMG_2106looks so sleek in gray

I'll get better pictures of each and keep the thread going.  I hope others chime in.

Will go along with you on the 'non black' inclusion for the Dreyfuss and Commodore Hudsons for sure.  Here's a green K-Line Berkshire belonging to Bill, a club member. It is very highly detailed and quite handsome. Just look at that piping from 20 years ago!  I miss K-Line...

Here is my Lionel Legacy fantasy Rio Grande 2-8-8-4 EM-1.  In reality, the D&RGW did in fact lease a number of DM&IR's 2-8-8-4s one or two seasons in the 1940s, one of which (#224) wrecked famously on February 7, 1943 on the Fireclay Loop due to airbrake failure and is the prototype of this model.

However, B & O's EM-1's were much lighter weight and smaller than the western 2-8-8-4s to account for the reduced dimensions necessitated by the B&O's tight tunnel and bridge clearances, so this isn't an accurate engine to begin with.  Lionel did put a centipede tender on this model to make it look more like a DM&IR Yellowstone.

The green -- I haven't found any definitive proof one way or the other that the leased prototypes in fact had green boilers.  Even if they did, it almost certainly wasn't this shade.  You either love it or hate it.  It's definitely attention-getting.  I was going to sell or trade it but have decided to keep it and run it as a fantasy excursion train -- it looks pretty sharp with a string of D&RGW GGD heavyweight coaches.

C Sam, everything about that Berkshire is incredible, paint, detail everything!  K-line was cranking out some beautiful product at the end.  A long way from the Marx molds Maury started with.  A lot of us miss K-Line and the results of the competition they caused.

And here I thought basic black went with EVERYTHING

How about “Two Shades of Grey”???

Probably only get half credit for this ESE!!!

So let's see what we have here,

DGLE - check

Daylight Orange - check

Two shades of gray - Check and check.  Extra credit for that lighter one, I do like it!

Black and Silver - No partial credit!  Full check because it's definitely not drab!

I no longer have my USH PRR K-4 painted Tuscan Red (a few were apparently painted this way in the early 1930s) or my Weaver AT&SF Blue Goose, but they were definitely not "black" engines. There is some uncertainty about exactly which PRR engines were painted Tuscan Red, but there's no controversy about the Santa Fe's Blue Goose 4-6-4.

If the Royal Hudson be treason, count me in!!! Had the great fortune to ride behind it out of Vancouver back in the early 90’s. It was an incredibly beautiful engine and that looks like an amazing model (I really wish Lionel would make a Legacy version).

You were very fortunate indeed.  It would be nice to see this one back in steam again one day.
