This has been one of the most enjoyable threads I have ever viewed on the forum. I grew up in Northeast Philly during the 50s and there were hobby shops aplenty along Torresdale Avenue and Frankford Avenue. The Sunday comics and Boy's Life were required reading if you had any interest in Lionel Trains. During the Christmas holidays the great train layout at John Wanamakers Department Store in Center City was a must visit and you just had to take a trip on their Monorail. To this day I can't read enough of the old Lionel Ads. They really get the nostalgic juices flowing.
If you enjoy viewing and reading select Sunday Comic ads McComas and Tuohy's Volume VI, A Collector's Guide and History for Lionel Advertising and Art, contains numerous pages of these memorable ads and is highly entertaining. Also, Ron Hollander's, All Aboard, has a decent selection as well. Roger Carp's, The Art of Lionel Trains, is worthwhile reading too. Lastly, if you enjoyed thumbing through the Sears Catalogs during the 50s and early 60s looking for that special train you just had to have then you want to get a hold of, The Toy Train Department, edited by Thomas W. Holland which is a compilation of all of the Sears catalogs train sections from 1950 to 1969. A real trip back in time. .
