I am probably going to buy a few Atlas type signals, and right now we are not sure we want to insulate blocks to activate them. Some say I might have troubles with my TMCC or Legacy if I buy a Legacy system (or DCS). How does the infra red system work from Lionel or MTH? Can I put either of them along side the track, and then does the system sense the train as it goes by, rather than sense the train on coming like the Z-stuff does? Thanks for your opnions and or help in this matter.

Jeff: Just my observations, but I've never had any TMCC or Legacy signal issues caused by using insulated rail sections. I cannot vouch for DCS signals as I don't have a DCS system.

My Lionel 153IR sensors generally work well; they can be a little fussy getting adjusted, but seem to work well once that is done. Their sensitivity can be adjusted + the delay feature can be adjusted as well. They sense trains breaking their beam.

The only way you might have trouble is if your insulated sections are all over and not focused on one side of the track.

For me [even though I run conventiuonal] I use the inner rail as the insulated tripping rail and all power hook ups are on the middle and outer rails. It's more time consuming in the short run but pays off in the long run.

Thanks to you too for the input and observations. And I want to mention again, do you happen to be using signals from other Companies, such as Atlas?
