i bought a new es44 CN from a major east coast dealer. It was erratic when responding to cab 2 commands.

Back it went to the the dealer for repair.

It came back no better than when it left. When I called, they said they would look at again, but it likley was a problem with my equipment as the loco tested fine at their store.I did not think my layout was the problem as all the other locos work fine, only this one acted badly.

Turned out to be the plugin connector for the antenna. The connector seemed loose and once I pushed the pins on the board apart just a little the connector seemed tighter and now the loco runs as it should.

i got lucky and wanted to pass this tip along in case someone else has this issue.

I'm sure it worked fine at the repair shop too.  Off of the layout environment and probably no further away from the shop's Legacy components than a few feet, a proper antenna wasn't needed for it to perform correctly.  Same scenario during factory testing I bet. Back on your layout the faulty connection once again impeded the signals.

A great tip for those experiencing similar symptoms and one that's easily traced and repaired.

I just fixed the same engine with the same issue for a NY customer.  The antenna wire was not plugged into the receiver board.  When the customer took it apart to look, he pinched a hot wire between the body and frame shorting things out when he put it back together.  Your story looked familiar but two different locations.  Good pickup on your part and thanks for throwing it out to the guys as I am sure someone else might hit this.

Bruce, you made a good point and I am sure this happens often.  I put all Legacy repairs on my layout and let it run.
