As George Lashley recently commented "Like the Phoenix, your club is rising again!"  Yes, we are - in a great new facility. Co-founder Harold and his extended family own some beautiful acreage just north of I-40 where his adult children have a successful vacation rental business. This last year they have acquired 4 cabooses and are converting them into rental units. One is complete and operational and turned out fantastic. Lettered for the Seaboard 'Family Lines', it sets next to their new office building under construction that contains laundry and storage facilities for the cabins. Upstairs they've given us an open 30' x 50' room for our club.

Several years ago some fellas talked to us at a train show and offered us a large layout that needed to be moved. It was built by a professional crew from somewhere(?). If you guys see this, please and fill us in. Harold and his two sons rented a truck and drove down to Greenville SC and dismantled it and put it in storage. It has been erected in our new room and we've begun to assemble the sections and clean the track. It's interesting that different sections of track will react to the elements in different ways - one will be rusted heavily while the adjoining section will appear unblemished.

Tonight, we were able to run an Atlas 4-4-2 successfully around most of the existing track - all from a set of clip-on leads and a Lionel C80! This with out the wiring harness being connected. Plans are to extend the layout around the far end of the room making the layout about 44 feet in length. Lots to do and we'd like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to become a part of this new project. At present it's just 4 of us to make decisions and plans. We'd like your input!

Awesome news Sam!  I am so glad to hear that your club has landed on its feet with a new layout and a  new facility.  I have always been impressed with how much is accomplished by so few members.  Goes to show a club does not need lots of people, just dedicated ones.  Fabulous looking start.

The control panel reminds me of panels I have seen that Vernon Peachy built.

All the best to you and your club.

Don

Thanks fellas - Your encouragement is most appreciated. Anyone interested in visiting will have ready accommodations available literally 75' feet away from the layout in the L&N caboose. Check out Buffalo Creek Vacations in Clyde NC for photos and information. This is a great area to visit with your family as nearby Maggie Valley offers skiing in winter and all the beauty of these western NC mountains year round. Asheville is but 30 minutes to the east with the amazing Biltmore House built by the grandson of 'Commodore Vanderbilt' and is a sight to see.

Great to see the club has found a new space and is well on the way to getting the layout up and running. Looks like a nice big space too, and a nice layout. A couple of clubs around here (both HO, we have no 3 rail O clubs) lost their space and ended up selling everything off and dissolving the clubs. Looks like you all came out a lot better. Good luck with it all.

Hey Roger - Come visit us sometime. Not too far away!

Here are a couple of pics of the Seaboard caboose from several months ago.  The building is now located behind it dug into the side of the hill.

They also have a herd of American Bison numbering about 23 at last count. The calves are really cute and red in color for several months. There are also some Llamas, miniature horses, goats, rabbits, chickens...

November Update -  We've added several additional tables almost filling the room. Only one corner to go which will completely link all tables together.  The trestle from the old layout has been incorporated into this one and trackwork is commencing anew.

New Members WELCOME!

Sam,

Looking good there. If you check out under the announcement section here for my club, Ocean County Society of Model Railroaders, you can see the progress we have done from dismantling the old layouts moving from our 24 year church location to our present location which we spent almost 2 years renovating and now for the past 6 months, we have finally started to build the HO and O gauge layouts.

It is a lot of work building from Scratch!

Best wishes on your new home layout.

Ted
