Other than using driven smoke for the whistle steam effect, you mean? No. There was some steam release stuff down low on the loco stuff that was interesting (which I think had been done maybe 5 years ago - didn't pay much attention to exaqctly when) but Lionel's use of smoke to simulate steam in the whistle steam effect, while not very common yet, is the only innovative use of it I've noticed lately.
In short, Lionels "stack smoke" is finally on a par with MTH. Lionel has also come up with some new features offered on select models. This Lionel Vision line challenger has steam whistle,dynamo, and blowdown in addition to the traditional stack smoke.
This Lionel legacy s3 features the steam cylinder effect.
