Hello all. I have an sd 70 kcs loco which operates flawlessly with the smoke switch off. Turn the smoke switch on and then it will begin behaving like a bad child. Functions are erratic and engine will speed up on it's own. I have installed a new ac regulator. The chips and the board they go in are new as well as the sound board. yes, I started with other troubles. I have to believe the motherboard is bad-what say you? Thanks,

I feel Neil is correct.  When you turn the smoke off, does it run good again?  Smoke element or junk fan motor.

If the locomotive runs OK after turning the smoke off, go to this step next.

On the side of the smoke unit PCB is a 2 wire Leoco connector that has a red and black wire.  This goes to your smoke unit fan motor.  Pull that plug and power you locomotive up and turn the smoke back on.  If the locomotive runs OK it is your fan motor gone bad.  Do not run for more than enough time to varify the engine runs good.  If your locomotive rund badly, it is the smoke element.

Let us know.

Hi Marty-sorry for the delay. The smoke unit was installed before my initial post.

Now, a little different topic. I have another sd 70 -Norfolk SOUTHERN. Saturday I  was running it and suddenly the smoke unit malfunctioned and burnt up some wiring and at this point I Don't know what else. I got it all working great except for the smoke unit-of course. Not looking to go too deeply into this right now. I want to deal with these one at a time.

I also just bought a brand new ac6000 Chessie loco. The smoke unit makes no you can't believe when you run it. Buzzing like crazy. Also, the ditch and oscillating lights don't work properly. You can't operate them manually with the cab2.  More issues as well I Don't want to get into it now.

Point of this info is I'm very concerned about the quality of these trains. Seems to me the smoke units (fan driven) are horrible. The wiring in the sd70's is incredibly sloppy. I enjoy fixing things;however, this has gotten out of hand. I'm very wary of even running the smoke units now. I'm about ready to send them to someone and let them have a go at it. Again, I'm concerned and disappointed about these things-it's become more fixing than running by a pretty fair amount.

Sorry for the rant;however, I had to get it out. Thanks.  Paul

I shipped an SD 60 to Lionel on Wed 3/ 28 with a bad smoke unit. They recieved it late on Fri.. I got the e-mail from them on Mon that the recieved it. They sent an e-mail on Thrus that it is on it's way back and I should have it on Mon. That took less time then you looking for some one to fix it. I like to just go to Mike and his crew. They do great work and their turn around time is quick and the have all the parts right there.
