I recently bought a used MTH steam engine and the smoke unit buzzes loudly whenever producing smoke. It still generates plenty of smoke but the buzzing is annoying. Any ideas or suggestions to address this? Any easy fixes or will it have to be replaced? Thanks

Two likely causes, the motor bearing under the fan needs a drop of oil or the fan itself is rubbing on the cover. Its a press fit on the motor shaft so it can be moved carefully without damage. It will still whine just from moving the air.

The motor may also simply be going bad, in which case you'll need to replace it. Pretty simple repair.
Remove the fan from the motor shaft and place one drop of oil around the fan shaft. When you replace the fan itself do not push it all the way down. You must have clearance top and bottom for the fan to spin freely. Next power the fan with 2-3vdc from a separate power pack, switch on/off several times. This is to insure the fan spins freely and does not bind.
