I have a Hiawatha PS2 steam engine (30-1489-1) that I pulled out new to try last night. Everything seems to be working ok, but the smoke is very weak. I primed it correctly even before putting it on the tracks (added about 15 drops) The smoke unit is on, but the smoke barely even comes out. Its almost seems like the fan blower is not working/on as I can see smoke being generated, but it seems to lay dormant in the stack. I blew into it a few times to clear any air pockets.

1. This thing is from 2008 and this is the first time running it not sure if maybe the wick got hard?

2. Anything else I can check without having to take it apart or at least bring it in for service?

3. I used the same smoke and track/power on my Metra diesel engine and it blows out smoke just fine

Thank you

Matt

The first thing to do is verify whether or not the fan is actually blowing. The best way to do that is by holding your cheek next to the stack. The nerves there are some of the most sensitive in your body and you will feel the breeze more easily than just holding your finger over it or whatever. If the fan isn't working, you need to determine whether it's a broken or loose wire, or if the fan motor itself is bad.

It's possible that you just haven't saturated the wick enough to get the smoke going. 15 drops will dampen the wick, but may not be enough on a dry unit to get the smoke going. If you can feel a breeze from the fan, I'd try adding another 10 drops or so. If that doesn't do it, or if the fan isn't working, you'll probably have to take it apart and diagnose the problem, or take it to a professional.

I guess I will post my fix, I decided to take the liberty and try to fix this myself. It proved to work out well.

1. I removed the engine shell

2. Removed the smoke unit to inspect the wick, which looked fine so I repacked it back in

3. Checked the fan making sure it spins and was not blocked

4. Checked fan wires made sure end connections were locked up

5. Started it back up and I can now HEAR the fan

This thing smokes like crazy now!
