Per video, it also sputter in Neutral-before-Forward, but works fine in Neutral-before-Reverse. Looks like it's related to the smoke fan voltage. What engine is this?
Also, it looks like you're in command-control. If you turn off the headlight and ditch-lights (and any other lights/loads that changes between Fwd and Rev) does it change behavior?
I'll have to check about the lights and such. but if you look in the background theres another lionel sd40t-2 running and it's smoke doesn't change this was a lash up I know rope jokes are coming soon. the one with smoke issue is the lead engine of 3
that level of the layout is powered by a 180 watt brick. about 167 ft of track per scarm. with a few sidings that are off so less than 167
Which engine manufacturer and which command system is operating the engines?

It's a Lionel Lionmaster6-28274 with tmcc I also have dcs but wasn't using it .
It looks like the fan kicks on when in reverse and nothing in forward, did you try removing it from the lash up and and running as it's own engine ? I think it might have something to do with the way it's set up in the lash up.

this engine has never had great output for smoke. but yesterday I wanted to see if I could do a lash up with all 4 UP engines I have all 4 are lionel one is an upgrade to tmcc with err. it wouldn't run the same speed so I pulled it out. but noticed that the first engine #8048 smoke output changed per direction where as #4004's smoke stayed the same either direction. the third engine #8049 it's smoke doesn't work has a new smoke unit but the regulator was also bad. the forward smoke output is the normal I see just a small stream of smoke. but when I seen it in reverse it was a lot more than I am use to in this engine . which looks to be the normal amount of smoke. just weird that it changes per direction where as #4004 doesn't change at all. I work from home so at lunch time I will try a reset
My guess on this issue is either the smoke voltage regulator or the R2LC board
