I recently acquired an S-gauge A-A set of FP-7's that I'm converting from DC to AC and was thinking about adding a sound card (these locos are Union Pacific from American Models).  I know there are cards/boards available from American Models, ERR, Dallee (though don't know if sound chips specific to the FP-7 are available from any or all of these folks).  My question is whether any of you have had any experience with cards from these folks - or others - in terms of overall sound "quality", ease of install etc.  I've looked briefly to see if there are any references comparing sound cards from various suppliers, but haven't found anything.

I haven't dug into what's involved in the installation engineering yet - I thought I'd start with scoping out the sound card(s) first.  One of the A units is powered and the other is a dummy, which I thought could be used for the sound install.  Hmmm - that probably means drilling holes in the chassis for the speaker (?) and if the sound card is driven by the board controlling the motor, that means some sort of tether between the two units (?).  There is power to the dummy for the light.

thanks in advance for any insights -

Rich

Rich, I am not sure of the specifics of the sound boards, l purchased a used American Models B--unit that has a sound board. It is independent of the powered A-unit, gets its power from the track, no tether. The speakers are part of the sound board. I don't know if that board will fit in an A-UNIT, it is full length in the B and mounts to the roof. The engine revs are controlled by the transformer throttle as is the speed of a conventional locomotive.
