Speed problem PS3 U30C csx

You can do a search here for posts on this. The tach reader is not working right. sometimes it's a pinched wire, a wire shorting, bad tach tape (stripes), wrong spacing, dirty, defective, etc.

 You might get lucky with a Feature reset but it's more likely one of the things Joe described.   Menu/advanced/reset engine/ Feature reset.

A shorting wire could be  a motor lead  wire touching the motor casing.

I'm having the same problem with my new RK P3 VA FM. I moved the tach reader away from the stripes and it worked fine. Unfortunately the "fix" didn't last long. Marty Fitz thinks it might be a cold solder problem in which case I cannot fix it. You might try adjusting the position of the tach reader. Hope you have better luck than I had.

Thank you all I will try the reset first then move on to the tach reader. Then who knows what from there.  Its a shame it is a great engine.

Well Greg I tried to reset and that did not work. I have never opened an engine before to fix it.  I dont know what the tach reader looks like haha.  Ed did you send yours to Marty or were you able to fix the probably yourself.

 The tach reader is soldered onto a mini PC board and is attached to the motor. It's easy to find as it's job is to look at the stripes, and report the speed.

Sometimes it is just a broken wire. Most of mine, have been something else. If you know electronics, you can probe the wires for continuity. More times than not, I'd have to recommend having a tech look at it.

 Whatever you do, don't play with it while powered up! That's where you can do damage if probing around. I would check the basics first like making sure the stripes look good and the gap is correct. You'd need a spare to swap out and the PS3 boards have tiny wires that are not really fun to play with.

 BTW I am not a tech!

I finally looked at my U30C and realized that you can see the tach reader if you lift off the rear access hatch/screen. Maybe at least you can see that the stripes are good and there's no dirt build up messing things up?

I just checked the tach reader the stripes are good the white and yellow are attached not in the way I did not see any dirt but I started the engine up and ran her. The tach reader sputters at the speed of 1 then spins quickly around at the speed of 1.

Mike, You need to remove shell and examine.  3 wires attached to reader?  Reader gap less than a dime thickness?  After that most likely a bad reader.  They run $7.  G

Everything looks good maybe there is something you see I don't I have never changed a reader is it hard?

Mike, to change reader you pull out of holder and desolder those 3 wires and resolder on new tach reader and reinstall.

Trace those wires and make sure nothing is pinched.  Is the gap between the reader and flywheel good?  G
