Stalled in a snow drift

Back in the day when a steamer and train got stalled in a snow drift for a period of time did they keep the fire lit all the time so the boiler did not freeze and if the engine was out of coal did they drain the boiler before leaving it sit there if no help was coming.

You bet they did. Purposely allowing a boiler to freeze was one of the few behaviors that could get an Engineer and a Fireman fired with no possibility of ever being re-hired.
