That looks fantastic! It will look even better when the white areas have grass. Great work!
I am going to keep adding pictures as I get more done. With work and other stuff just don't get as muck done that fast.
Way to go Thom. Glad to see you will be able to run trains at home when you want and not just when the club has A show going on. Hope all is well take care. Ken
Hi Thom

I'd assume given the accessories and trains I'm seeing on the board this will be strictly a traditional-look tinplate layout? If so, I am not sure what you're doing for grass, but the Lionel 919 that was made during the postwar period (I think prewar as well) would be a good choice. I bought four bags on eBay for an 8x8 layout, and it is way more than enough for that size. Just a thought on that front (I personally think it looks better than grass mat).
Great start Thom both the layout and shelves, keep the pictures coming.

Andrew I plan on using old Lionel Grass think I have about 10 bags plus some in a can from another layout. I built a D-27 Disappearing Layout. Plus I have a $x5 layout I did that way. I do want it to look like a traditional layout.

Very cool! I'm doing a D-148 8x8 dealer display, so same idea. Look forward to updates- I think I'll do a tinplate layout like this one day, just don't have time, money, or space yet
Did not get much done this week. working on it some today Updated pictures coming.
you don't need no stinkin grass! just some green paint! I always thought the Standard Gauge looks great on carpet.
looks like you're off to a great start!
A great start

I worked about 2 hours today and got some ground cover down.
First taped it off then painted green then some old Lionel grass. I think it is now taking on a better look than all cream color. Still along wat to go.

The grass looks great.
The straights on the back wall look tight. Hope you have no clearance issues.
Looks great and know you are having a blast with it along the way!

Youre doing a real nice job on the layout!
Thanks for all the nice comments, Just takes time and I always am on the go with other hobbies. Therapy Dogs ,Cars, Custom Train Making and several others.. I just do not get as much done each week as I would like to. A little at a time and more will get finished.
Won't be long till The Pittsburgh Independent Hi-Railers are setting up for the Holidays. Starting in Nov we only have one weekend off till after New Years.
But at least I have started this project. Long time coming.
Nice job!!
Well done, I don't have standard gauge but you have sparked my interest.
Hi Thom,
I remember seeing pics of your 4x5 layout years ago, do you have any close-ups you could share or an aerial shot? I am planning a new compact tinplate layout and since I am strapped for space your plan would work. Great work so far.
Mike
I am glad to see a new layout coming aboard and it looks like a winner.
I am in the prosess of taking my mine due to a case of Alzhyser. (spelling). It has been a good friend for 15 years. Started taking down this morming, and I feel I have a lost a good friend.
The local train club is having a good meeting this coming Satturday at Remingtons in South West Springfield. Sorry for mess I have made but it best I can do.
Al Clair. P.S.Sorry for the bungles.
Sorry its been awhile. I got off to a good start then I hurt my back. So I haven't done much for awhile. I have painted some Barclay figures. I do think I will ever get them all done.
Today I finished some track and set some more things on the layout and making sure of the things I want to ad to the York list.
Just a few pictures.

Well done!
DOC,
Thom starting to look real good, you know me I like the traditional Tin Plate layout look the best. Your new layout is just fantastic.

I started this and got some things done very fast and I have been at a stand still. I really hope to work on it over the Thanksgiving weekend. I have picked up some things to add to it.
The Scenic Park I have no Idea who made it. I picked it up at a auction for a steel. $140. That was with all the buildings. I hadn't even started this layout but I knew it would be a good fit.
I will post some picture of what I get done I really want to get all the grass done.
So I haven't bee able to get much done at all. I had Back surgery in Dec and I know I can't bend for what I need to do. I can run trains and that is always fun to do. I did get some done before the back issue I will take some Pictures and post them.
Able to paint Barclay figures so that is a project that I have been doing. It all is coming along and there is no rush and I keep making changes as I go.
Your layout looks great!!! I'm in the process of building a new one myself and am looking to re-create the scenic plots for my villas and bungalows... did you do the same with yours?
Fantastic! I am starting to plan out my 5X9 layout. What 'grass' did you use? Keep up the great work.
Pre War Steve- My scenic plots were done by Ron Morris. I posted some other pictures today hat show them well. The big scenic park plot I have no idea who made it. Got it at a auction.
Dreyfuss Hudson- This layout is 7x13. The grass is original Lionel Grass. when ever I see a bag and it is priced fair I buy it. I want this layout to look like layouts from years gone by.
It looks fantastic and I'm extremely jealous!
If you could please, tell us what the table top is made of? Also, how did you paint it? (Roller/Rattlecan/ which brand of paint and color?).
I see the 919 grass for sale on ebay, but I don't know what is a fair price.
The top is Plywood. I had the paint mixed it is not white but cream color. The green is like the picture of my other lay out. Looks like a old Lionel green they used on layouts. I pain it green and sprinkle the grass on what sticks sticks . I save what does not stick and use it over.
fair price is no more than $10 a bad.
