I have a busy morning scheduled for tomorrow, so I’m going to do something different: I’m going to jump the gun by about 3 hours and start this thread on STEAMday Sunday Eve.

This is the place to share photos, videos and your comments about steam locomotives of all kinds. Just make sure to only post photos and videos you have taken or those in which you have obtained the written permission of the owner to share with us.

The video below shows a scale, highly detailed LionChief Plus Erie Camelback steamer pulling scale Atlas and MTH reefers and boxcars and a scale Lionel Erie caboose. The Camelback has excellent smoke, sounds and speed control and I’m running it using a dedicated remote:

Now, let’s fill our basements and attics with lots of steam.

Arnold

My steam engine for this Sunday 12-01-2024 is New York Central 0-4-0 #901 – an MTH Premier model (20-3261-1, MSRP $599.95) with PS2 delivered in 2007.

MTH describes this model as a Pennsylvania A5s with its Belpaire firebox replaced by a standard radial firebox. The builder’s plate on the smokebox of the New York Central version even says “Juniata Shops” – not a manufacturer from which the NYC would have bought locomotives.

I consulted Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines by W.D. Edson and H.L. Vail Jr. but found no reference to a superheated 0-4-0 switcher like this model. The NYC was buying more powerful 0-6-0 steamers by 1900 and began superheating them around 1915. So, although the model is not prototypical, it’s a good size for the O-36 inner loop on my 12’-by-8’ model railroad and its narrow rock cut.

This little engine, the O-36 loop, and the narrow rock cut remind me of the HO layout I had when I was about twelve years of age...

Great start Arnold, Happy Steam Eve Sunday.
Here is my Lionel Legacy Consolidation in New Hope & Ivy livery as custom ordered by METCA.  Number 40 is on the point of a New Hope & Ivyland Fall excursion; in my customized passenger cars.

Here are a few meets of the NH&I meeting the massive PRR 2-10-4 on the way out of town.

Happy STEAMDAY Sunday!

Taking a ride on the wayback machine today.
I bought a Lionel MPC 4-4-2 in the early days of my layout. I didn't think that the Lionel Lines tender looked right (too big) so I bought a ACL slope-backed tender for it instead.
I need to fix the prior owners really poor attempt at covering the white stripe on the sides one day too.

These 4-4-2's were not based on any prototype but rather the evolution of Lionel's many small "Scout" steamers over the years that would be found in starter sets. They have cast bodies and can motors with electronic e-units. One interesting fact I found in my highly scientific research was that the feed water heater shown on this model would often disappear and reappear in various model years.
She's a solid runner and I later added a light in the tender that is tied in to the reverse unit.

The crew on Santa Fe 2174 was on hand to assist with the swap.

Hello, StDaySun fans!  The bride requested assistance with Christmas decorations yesterday, so it’s off to the archives again for today’s post.

One of my more popular posts in the past featured my vintage 1938 O gauge American Flyer 0-6-0 no. 429, so here it is for folks who may not have seen it before.  This steamer was a gift from a friend of my father.  The video was shot a couple of years ago, but it still runs well today.

Also seen in the video is my Lionel NYC 2-8-0 Consolidation no. 1149.  This Lionel engine,  based on a a Southern Pacific prototype, must be the most ubiquitous steamer in the Lionel lineup.  It has been produced in many forms and for many roads for twenty years.  It seems someone posts one every Sunday, proving its enduring value.

Thanks Arnold for keeping the boiler steamed to get us rolling!   Here's a tribute to my K line A5.  I bought this engine brand new at a train show a few years back.  Once I got it home I decided it was just too pretty.  So I did de - prettied it with a heavy weathering job!  Here is a video and some pics.

Wow, I love SteamDay Sundays, such a great topic, locomotives with all those moving parts, steam whistle and more, just awesome…I may have posted these steamers before, but here’s my addition for today. @Don McErlean, your posting the post war 736 brings back great memories, those steamers were almost scale and ran so beautifully, smoked good and the air whistle was fun to hear… Happy Railroading Everyone IMG_2806IMG_2801IMG_2799IMG_2804IMG_2743IMG_1951IMG_1854
