Good morning, and welcome to STEAMday Sunday, the place to post photos, videos and comments about steam locomotives of all kinds.

At the outset, I wish to thank Melgar for doing such a fine job last week, substituting for me as your STEAMday Sunday starter.

This morning, I will begin this 9/22/2024 edition of this thread with an MTH Railking Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson that has been upgraded to PS 3:

Now, it’s your turn to share your favorite steamers.  When you do, please post only those photos and videos you have take, those in which you have received the written permission of the owner to post, and fully comply with the Forum Terms of Service.

New Haven 0-8-0 #3400 (MTH 20-3148-2, scale wheels, 2005), a favorite that’s usually parked on a siding on my layout, was to be my engine for this Sunday, so I began to take photos and videos. A few minutes later, it stopped abruptly and wouldn’t move. It’s now on its way back from repair. A simple fix.

Hello StDaySun people!  The nod today goes to Arnold for motivating me to feature a New York Central locomotive I haven’t posted recently.

It’s my Lionel 4-8-2 Mohawk.  To me, only the mighty Hudson says “NYC” more than a Mohawk.  I bought it from a friend “for a song”  because he prefers more modern engines.

I believe this engine dates to about 1990 and was equipped with an early Lionel sound system, “the mighty sound of steam”.  It has a piston smoke unit with one chuff per revolution and a venerable “Pullmor” motor.  It runs well (despite a fall to the floor with little damage!), smokes well after a little TLC to the smoke unit and has a rather haunting whistle.  I’ll post a video with whistle sound at a later date when I’m home.

Have a good STEAMday Sunday

PW Lionel Prairie Type, the Burlington Route purchased this style loco, their plan was to run these steamers through the farms and fields of the Midwestern prairies, thus 2-6-2's were dubbed Prairies. Over a 1,000 were built for several railroads, most larger railroads shied away from them due to early balancing issues. the 2-8-2 Mikado's began to replace The Prairie Locomotives. In the world of Lionel the Prairie name started in the prewar era with the 224 and 1666 loco both having 2-6-2. From 50 through 1969, all prairies carried the 2-6-4 wheel arrangement solely because the body remained unchanged, the 2026 did use 2-6-2 from 48-49

Sorry about this dark video made adjustments to the brightness but I can't get it to update.

Well today I have chosen a very humble offering.  It is the Marx 0-4-0 #400 steamer, very common and used repeatedly by Marx with many sets.  However today, she is in charge of a somewhat unique tender, the "Allstate" slope back tender from Sears - ALLSTATE being a trademark of Sears, Roebuck and Co and used on some of their train offerings.  In addition to the tender marking, we also have every car in her "tank train" consist marked with the ALLSTATE name.

Here she is at the front of her ALLSTATE tank train.  Note 3 dome, 2 dome, and 1 dome tank cars plus an ALLSTATE bay window caboose.  The cars all date from about the same era: Allstate slope back tender 1958-1960,  2 dome Allstate - 1958, 3 dome Allstate - 1960, 1 dome Allstate -1959, and the Allstate bay window caboose was available in 1958 & 1959.

Here is a better look at that bay window caboose.

Best wishes, Don
