Although Sunday is approximately 1 hour away, I’m eager to get this thread started so here goes.

STEAMday Sunday is about steam locomotives of all different kinds including all different gauges. Just show your favorite photos and videos of your favorite steamers. When you do, please remember to post only photos and videos you have taken, or those in which you have gotten the written permission of the owner to post, and please fully comply with the Forum Terms of Service.

My contribution today is the last major purchase I made early in 2024, a Legacy NY Central 0-6-0 cab #222 with the swinging bell feature.

First the photos of it:

IMG_3233
IMG_3232Next is a short video, which is now my favorite model train video among the approximately 2,500 train related videos on my smartphone:

When watching this video, notice the rats carrying slices of pizza into the subway staircase in the foreground, the illuminated Department 56 Yankee Stadium facade, the smoke, the swinging bell on top of the locomotive when the bell sounds, and the giraffe ducking his head under the telltale and into the giraffe car,

I can’t wait to see the steamers you decide to share on this thread,

Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year, Arnold

Hello, StDaySun fans!  Arnold, you have a lot of great whimsical scenes on your layout, but Yankee Stadium is my favorite.  I always get a kick seeing the rats with the pizza.  Have you considered having Bigfoot play left field?

Yesterday, on SwSat, we got into double-headers, which led me to a search of the archives for a steam duo.  I found a couple of Lionel favorites, NYC 0-6-0 no. 901 and NYC 0-6-0T Docksider no. X-8688, on a caboose hop.  The Docksider is the first of two steamers (the other is my B&M Mogul) that I turned into a dummy due to excess wear and tear.  It gave both of them a new life because I can’t double-head in conventional mode.

Arnold,

I'm pleased to see that your New York Central 0-6-0 steamer #222 is running well.

I’m posting New York Central 4-6-0 ten-wheeler #1244 again. I think this model is as nice as anything else that Lionel has to offer, so I’ve kept it on my layout for weeks and continue to run it.

The website of the New York Central System Historical Society has a color photograph of #1244 at Yorktown Heights, NY – on the “Put.” The photo was taken on July 20, 1951 and shows the silver-colored cylinder/valve covers, so the model's paint job is prototypical. Links to two photos of #1244 on the NYCSHS below - where you may see and purchase the photos.

Yesterday I ran my B&O 2-8-0 #2770, a custom run from Pat’s trains. I find it relaxing watching this particular engine run especially with the gloss paint job. I like the look of the glistening shine in this video even though it’s far from prototypical. I recently purchased the matching single sheathed boxcar from Beth that I’ve been looking for with the other road number. The caboose is an unlettered custom run from Mr. Muffin’s that I added the K4 B&O decals.

Happy New Year to all, Gene

Mel, just curious, looking at the pictures, did the original #1244 not have classification lights?

Gene

Thanks so much Arnold for keeping the fire hot and the boiler pressure up to get us running today!  Great looking 0-6-0 you have running today.  I'm sure it scared a few rats away as it trundled by!   Lucky rats are eating pizza no less!! LOL!

Today here's a video of steam running on my railroad this morning .... A Westside Lumber Shay ... B&O President Harrison P7 Pacific ( I just love this engine and especially when the B&O Martha Washington Stations Sounds diner is in its' consist.  So entertaining to operate this train! ) and a C&O 0-8-0 sitting still on a siding.

There are also two still shots of the President Harrison in both night and day.

Gene - Terrific looking locomotive!!! WOW!!!  Your decal work on the caboose looks great!!

Thanks Arnold for getting us started today.   My contribution today is an American Flyer (Chicago Flyer) Type 401 locomotive and her consist of passenger cars.  I acquired this as a "set" however I don't think that Flyer marketed it as such.  The cars and loco are from slightly different periods, the loco somewhat earlier in the 30's but so what.

Photos of F-12e #1244 on the website of the New York Central System Historical Society show two small classification lights mounted on the front of the smokebox but there are no photos of #1244 with classification lights atop the smokebox, as on the model. Another reference shows F-12e #1238 and it does not have similar lights. However, a 1936 photo of F-12e #2114, which later was renumbered #1240, has classification lights exactly like Lionel's model of #1244. It's possible that classification lights varied over time and depended on the division to which a locomotive was assigned. I can understand why Lionel would not go through the expense of modeling this detail precisely. The silver cylinder/valve covers are clearly visible on all photos of #1244 (one color, the others black and white) that I found on the NYCSHS website.

Thanks for the explanation. I see what you’re saying, I noticed the 2 tabs at around 10:00 & 2:00 on front of the smoke box, they just didn’t look like lights in the picture.

At first, I wasn't sure they are lights because they are so small. Other photos, especially black/white ones, show them a bit more clearly. I'm pretty sure I've seen older Lionel models with small lights on the front of the smokebox.
