First off, forget about the sound if you're having a smoke issue. The tender only receives a one-way signal to control the tender functions, it has no effect on the locomotive.
When you go in reverse, do you still have chuffing? If not, my top suspect would be the chuff switch. Other than that, I can't imagine how the smoke unit would only work in forward...
After pressing "74" do you get the acknowledgement whistle.

found my problem. after I pressed the aux 1 key I got icons instead of number so pressed aux one again to get numbers and of course it was no longer in aux 1. I just pressed the same key that has a 7 and the same key that has a 4 and it worked fine. Did not know you could do this. It should say something in the manuel about this. All is fine now. This engine does not puff smoke just comes out all the time.

what you have learned is the numbers are always there, they are just covered up with a description.
maybe check the chuff switch that /john was talking about earlier?

It really doesn't have a chuff switch?
I know smoke streams out of the prototype without significant puffs showing most of the time. But I would have thought it needed one for the speed/sounds anyhow, and it would be tied into the fan almost by default on the Lionel control board.
The JCL Challenger has a chuff switch for sound, but a constant output smoke generator.

Lionel has many, many different methods of smoke control. As Chuck states some are constant on. No puffing. The Chuff switch first purpose was for sound signaling. to the RS Boards. Some models also use it to turn on the smoke fan when the switch closes. G
The Chuff Switch on the JLC Challenger is right below the motor flywheel, I have one apart on the bench right now.
