Wasn't the prior iteration of Moguls that most returned like this? I know Pete fixed the issue with the spacer with the drive rods if I am remembering correctly? I do recall that when Dave got some of those back at Lionel some issues weren't presenting themselves right away, and others began having other issues altogether that was baffling Dave(IIRC)?
Great job SEAN!!! Thanks for the info on fixing this, you did a fantastic job of show and tell. I am having no problems with my 1970 s version since I changed the traction tires to MTHs. However I don’t have a grade to go up. I might change the wheel set out but for now I am happy with the engine. Thank you for bringing everything up to speed on this problem that should have been diagnosed by Lionel and tested before being sent out to the public. CONGAS auto you!! Lionel should pay you a royalty for doing the research.👍👍😉😁
Thanks for sharing Sean! I know the frustration but I think you handled it well and in the end came out with a good locomotive.

that is what fixed YOUR engine on YOUR specific track. Others have already reported that solution did not work so well on other mfr.’s track……This is not a one size fixes all solution…….

Right, but that is what this specific post is about, Specifically Fastrack switches. I can't comment on other track systems. So, for Fastrack switches this is the resolution.

Dave I was able to fix three that I had plus two that others had with just the rod bushing. I read that some had gearbox issues but never had that problem. It wasn’t that hard to figure out. The 2002 Moguls had the bushing and the Legacy ones didn't even though they had identical side rods and rod screws.
The only downside of the TMCC Moguls is they can only be double headed with another TMCC Mogul. The Legacy ones can double head with another Legacy engine as long as they have a tach sensor which is the majority. The BEMC back EMF engines have a different speed curve.

Yes, agreed, and the above statement solidifies your findings for the next guy having an issue that uses the search feature when this thread goes off into obscurity,…….
I’m glad in the end you resolved your issue, and perhaps this will help others with Fastrack. You soldered through it very well!….result, ….so well done …..

It's threads like this that make this forum great. My question is why wasn't this issue seen at Lionel? Again why do we need to modify our expensive trains to get them to run right?
Great question Gary. I think we have had quite a few engines in recent years that have popped up with slight or bigger issues that were not recognized from the manufacturer. Some the manufacturer did later say that it was an issue, others not though. I do know Sean has said that Lionel has said that they are aware of the issue, guessing the tires only though, as it is not exactly clear if there are any other issues we haven't found yet. I think Pete indicated that the gearbox issue was fixed, bushings too.

I'll have to try double-heading my two Legacy moguls, the early Legacy and the #89.

Both early Legacy.

Looks good Pete, I have no reason to assume mine won't work as well.
Here is the tire mine came with compared to an MTH tire. I was derailing on my Ross switches until I swapped out the tires.
got one of mr muffins custom runs comming. I got the mth tires shawn recomended already if needed.
I use fastrack so I will run it first then try the tire swap or move the wheel set to the rear.
seems all lionel moguls have the tires on the front set of drivers. matty c. has a tmcc one for sale and it has them on the front.
swapping the tires sloved the derailment issue for shawn, but the pulling issue up his grade was the next issue to come up.
I got one of these because I just loved that small little shorty tender. I also like small steamers at the moment even though I have plenty of large ones. they can be run on my current layout.
I was planning to pull about 10 maybe 12 freight cars with this engine. given its size. maybe 3 passenger cars.
In real life how many cars did these engines actually pull before needing a helper?

Well, I've seen #89 at Strasburg pulling seven or eight cars.

If you have an issue Swap the wheelsets, make sure the front set is not jammed like mine was and you can also call Lionel for a replacement set of tires from the Generation one moguls (6108461206). Got mine today and they are much thinner than ones that came on it from factory, but thicker than MTH ones. Do one or all of the above and you should be all set.
This morning I watched Chris RBP Trains video on 89. He has FasTrack, and ran his 89 on it through one of his switches. I didn't have any issues diverging, it went into the curve perfectly. I didn't think about this too much at the moment, but wasn't it the issue going straight? I guess we'll have to see if Chris has any issues going straight in due time.
Hey Chris, has there been any issues running 89 at all or still smooth running?
I saw that video also. maybe its not all the engines in the production run or not a one size fits all solution. bill b. of the om@s had a video and he stated he had moved them to the rear for smoother running and had good luck. btw his layout is 036 fastrack.
I have one comming from mr.muffins. its on laya buy so when I get it I will chime in here to let you know out of the box my findings I also have 036 fastrack and switches.
I hope there is no issues out of the box, but I will probably move the drivers with the traction tires to the back just for ease of changing the tires when needed though.
