Ladies and Gentlemen,

If you like a good mystery about the early railroad days here in our country, with steam era Railroading as the subject, there is a good well written book by Clive Cluster and Scott, that is definitely worth reading.  The name of the Book is THE WRECKER, it is about the 1st real terrorism here in the USA, directed toward the Railroad industry by some ruthless fanatics, an exciting read all the way.  Taken from some real problems that plagued the Railroads Companies in the early days, the books is seriously exciting reading, especially for this of us who love the Railroads.  The story is written in decent detail about the early days of Railroading during the Steam Era, when the Railroads were King in the USA.  I highly recommend taking the time to read this one, anyone who loves a good mystery about railroading will have a hard time setting the book down.

Enjoy

Hi Dave

Thanks for the tip, the book sounds very interesting.

It is also available as a audio book, audio books are fun if you are on a long vehicle trip.                                   See video trailer below book cover.

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt stories still remain my favorites.  But of all the other books he has co-written, the Isaac Bell stories are my second favorite.

The Wrecker is the second of nine (so far) Isaac Bell stories, and while it is an entertaining read, I would suggest that if someone is new to the Isaac Bell stories, they actually start with the first one, The Chase.  Here is a summary that I found on line for The Chase:

"April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before.

But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next…

1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses and then vanishes without a trace.

Fed up by the depredations of the “Butcher Bandit,” the U.S. government brings in the best man they can find – a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers coast to coast.

But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues what is quickly becoming clear to him is the sharpest criminal mind he has ever encountered, and the woman who seems to hold the key to the bandit’s identity.

Using science, deduction, and intuition, Bell repeatedly draws near only to grasp at thin air, but at least he knows his pursuit is having an effect.

Because his quarry is getting angry now, and has turned the chase back on him. The hunter has become the hunted.

And soon it will take all of Isaac Bell’s skills not merely to prevail… but to survive."

TrainroomGary,

Thanks for the tip about the audio book, I will pick it up for my travels back and forth to Potter/Tioga.  I did not know THE WRECKER was in Audio format!  Ya got to love Isaac Bell and his honey in this book, great stuff.

Jim,

I like Dirk but Isaac to me is even better!

Bryan,

Got to admit the book would be a great movie, don't know if there is a director today that could do it justice however.  Could you see Tom Selleck as Isaac Bell.

Ken,

Gary has a great suggestion with the Audio Book also.
