Hi folks,

I am trying to do a first layout mainly for my son, a responsible 5 year old, and daddy too.  We have an interesting mix of old and new.  He is running on Fastrack and we are getting him the figure 8 add on to make it more interesting.  I am planning to loop my old O gauge track around the outside so I can run my postwar 2025.  At this point I do not want to connect the lines, as I want him to be able to run his train without having to worry about collisions.  I do, however, intend to create a 2 main line layout with connections eventually when he gets a bit older.

He is also getting a crossing signal & a crossing gate, a toy store, a smoking diner, and the 445 switch tower (grandparents have been into this idea too!).  We already have a Marx tinplate whistling station, a water tower, and a tunnel section.

So what do you think?  Will this plan provide some interesting first railroading for me and the little guy?  Any suggestions to spice it up?  Thanks for all your input!

It certainly should!

The great thing about it is - you can change it!  I don't think it will stay the same for long.  Birthdays (a pair of switches) and other special occasions will come and these things have a way of expanding.  Rearrange it and see what happens.

Have fun with it.  The most important thing to remember is to not get too complicated or stuck on the details.  You want to have the layout available to him and get the maximum play value out of it.

Enjoy!!!

Hey I like that idea.  I could always add that when I get the time, it would add a new, pardon the pun, layer.  Thanks!

Thanks. I added a 2nd level to my Christmas layout this year. It doesn't have track, just buildings, but it's made a world of difference. If I were going to use this same layout next year, I'd add a "real" 2nd level with another train. My 2nd level is a simply 1x3 box covered with plywood and raised high enough for the train to clear underneath. It's covered with white cloth and has cutouts for the tunnel entrance/exit.
