From Wikipedia:
Two models were offered: the 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW) PA-1/PB-1 (built between September, 1946 and June, 1950); the 2,250 horsepower (1,680 kW) PA-2/PB-2 (built between April, 1950 and December, 1953)
Models popularly termed the PA-3/PB-3 were in fact only an upgrade of the PA-2/PB-2. The true PA-3/PB-3 model would have boasted 2,400 horsepower (1,800 kW), though none were ever built. Aside from the small power increase between the PA-1 and the PA-2, differences were minor. Externally PA-2s could be distinguished by the absence of the "eyebrow" trim piece on the grille behind the cab and the porthole window behind the radiator shutters. Internally, later PA-2 and PB-2 production featured a water-cooled turbocharger and other engine compartment changes, but these were frequently added to older models undergoing major repairs or overhauls. Four PA-1s were upgraded by Morrison-Knudsen in 1974-75 for passenger service on the Delaware & Hudson and became the PA4.[2] These were eventually used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack" train and then by the Mass Bay Transit Authority before being sold to Mexico.
Stephan, where did I say anything about making generic versions? At some point we will have to decide which version we will use for a given road, since some of them had both. The differences between PA-1 and PA-2s are details on the roof and some cab window treatments. We will not make GENERIC versions.

Scott: You are being too defensive. No one stated that you said that. I am on your side. I just asked the question simply because the versions are not that great. By the way you need to include the SRR version.(green)
Stephen
PS: It was stated here that you were going to do the RF&P coach in the Silver set. But it is not listed. Several have asked, but no reply or post on your website.
PSS: Why do you post only on the 3-rail thread (ex. China update) and not both. Especially if mostly sales are 2-rail now (?).

Why wouldn't he be? Especially considering some of your previous posts.

Scott,
Too defensive? Hardly. I see it as standing behind your products and company. I would much rather buy from someone that cares about their business.
This is probably thread drift but here goes anyway. It was good to see you at the show and I wish I could have talked to you more but I was focused on something else and never got back to your table(s). Anyway, thank you for making yourself available to all of us. You provide products with amazing value and service. I applaud you and your efforts.
I'm looking forward to the SD models and the possibility of converting some to P48 for my friends. The big Alcos will be a welcome addition also and I foresee a successful run.
Good luck and thanks for putting yourself out there.
Jay
I'm a bit sad that I already own 4 sets of Alcos. 2 MTH Santa Fe's, 1 MTH D&RG and 1 Lionel SP Daylight set however Scott, if I can get a specific road number I'll prolly take a set. I have the builders plates of off one of the SP Alcos and I would love to have the engines
Looks like I'll be in for an ABA set. PRR green 5-stripe, all units powered (and I assume with sound) is just what I'm looking for. Should have the funds saved by 2017.
Me too,but a single stripe ABA.
Norm
I've been waiting. I ordered an A-B-A set of guess which railroad.
I know some that are looking forward to the NKP versions with the bell in the nose.
Stephen
Norm - Just a heads up - the PRR didn't have any Alco PB-1 units painted in the single stripe Dark Green Locomotive Enamel scheme. Based on info in Paul Wither's book on PRR PA-1's, PB-1's of the 10 PA's and 5 PB's only PA-1's 5757an 5758 were repainted in the DGLE single stripe scheme. If you want a fantasy scheme ok - just know going in that is what you are ordering.
On a different note an interesting use for a Sunset Tuscan red 5 stripe PB1 would be to mix it in with a pair of Sunset Tuscan red E8 A units - quite prototypical as the PRR didn't order E8 B units. While the Alco PA1's were re-geared for freight and secondary passenger service in 1954, the 5 PB-1's retained their 100 mph gearing for several more years and labored on in the Harrisburg passenger pool with EMD E7's and E8's.

The Bluebirds are one of the nicest looking PAs done next to the Cornell Red of the 'Valley of course.
Wonder how many NKP reservations are going to be necessary to offer that one road-specific detail? (or are there other roads with that?)
Thanks again,Ed. It will be an A-A for me then.

Yep just trying to stir up some interest in unique paint schemes.

Awesome Scott!
I've just reserved a Union Pacific PA & PB plus I also added a matching GGD 6-car Harriman passenger set. I can't wait to see more details....
Quick poll for all you UP fans who might be ordering the PA-PB sets in UP colors: Would you like to see the trucks painted Grey (1948-1955) or Silver (mid-fifties on)?
My preference is the as delivered Grey color. I can't quite tell from the illustration on 3rd Rail's site but they look to be silver? Mine is just one opinion but I think the silver truck versions have been done to death. Ultimately it comes down to what 3rd rail wants to produce based on feedback for what will sell.
I've emailed Scott my questions.
Very excited about these models!!
Hey Jay - you'll get to try your hand at P:48 conversion for the MoPac PA. You can practice on those SD's <g>.

I'll guess your choice if you guess mine. I'm wondering if they're going to have fixed pilots.

I hope you do. Maybe you can get Scott to do the 10 Pullman cars as well!

Thanks Rusty. Now you know why I do O scale. I can't see what's in front of my face. I'd be lost in a smaller scale.
Scott, my hero, Hunter Green NH PAs. Wil be ordering a pair. Thanks, Al
Stephan, nice to know you are on my side. Sorry I missed meeting you in person at Chicago. But realize that open ended questions may give people impressions unattended, i.e. generic versions of PAs. I added the RF&P Coaches (Silver Meteor).
Thank you, and thank others for their comments and suggestions.
As for the question on fixed pilots, we only do them that way. In the future we will put 2R pilots in each 3R Box since we will be tooling them in plastic for easier production as apposed to casted in brass.
Scott
Scott:
I should have stated the question better!. We all know that that your models are not generic like the other two companies, as each model has road specific details. The PA bodies have so little difference that most would never notice the difference between a PA1 and PA2.
Will you be able to do the NKP bell in the nose?
Best Regards,
Stephen
Next....RS11s
If NKP had a bell in the nose, we will attempt to model it. Scott
Notice that the truck and body paint on the Aspen Leaf are NOT the same. Trucks are reflecting silver, while the body is a very dull even greyish silver.
I'll keep pressing for the black bumblebee, hopefully more people will e-mail Scott about wanting one.
Also, please please please make sure there is no high water pants on this project. I know you guys do your best to tackle all the issues, but high water pants surely destroy the beauty of the lines in the Alco PA/PB design. Can't wait to see them. Thank you, Scott!

Scott - you guys are some of the most receptive in the business. You're constantly improving the breed and raising the bar for affordable, high quality O scale trains. Thanks for taking the time to listen and for responding online.
I'm happy to see the PAs offered in Erie. I would prefer the Erie Black and yellow scheme. In 1949 all PA1s and PA2s were delivered in the Erie black freight scheme. About 1/2 were repainted into the two tone green passenger scheme sometime in the 50s. Erie always thought of the PAs as dual service locomotives. Only EMD E8s and a few PAs received the two tone green scheme.
Dunno what " high water pants" are, but if one wanted a "one of a kind" paint job it ought to be easy to find someone with the skill to do that. Maybe even in China, where the cost should be less?
By high water pants I mean the huge gap between the trucks and the body often seen in 3 rail engines.
high water pants unfortunately gets transmitted to the 2 rail models way too often. Sunset/3rd Rail usually does a pretty good job at avoiding it.
That gap is my single most annoying part of 3 rail. I know, I know, why does the third rail not bother me? because it was a part of trains form my child hood. My first train set had it. That gap between the frame and the truck makes the loco look hideous especially steam locos.
I e-mailed Scott Mann yesterday and he indicated he might do a Gulf, Mobile & Ohio version is he received enough interest.
So any GM&O fans out there or those who might enjoy an model PA1 in their classy maroon, red and black with gold lettering scheme, get in touch with Scott

If he does the Santa Fe's, he will already have the roof parts!
Must have been designed by some guys from Consolidated. All the B-24 pilots will tell you the same thing - they had a great view of the hood. Nothing else, but a great view of the hood - just like these engines.
I'm curious about how you will handle the rain gutter and different grills on the SP daylight and bloody nose units and how you will handle the SP and UP trian numbers on the number boards
