Hello Switcher Saturday faithful.  Welcome to another edition of our weekly thread celebrating the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.

On this thread we welcome Switchers of all scales and gauges,  obey the OGR tos regarding pictures,  and most of all have fun.   Obviously there's lots of 3 rail O gauge.

Today I found the "Montana lokie" and the New Republic Locomotive almost close enough to get good pictures, but not quite. The light was against me as well,  but I still got some nice shots.

So please share your photos,  videos, vignettes,  stories etc...  And have a great weekend everyone.

Good evening fellow switcher fans!!  Off to an early start  and thanks JHZ563 for notching out the throttle early to get us rolling!

Today on the FJSR it's all about a weather beaten venerable Pennsy A5 as it makes its' way through Fall foliage on the Mountain Division of the Free State Junction Railway.   This is/was a brand new K line scale model that I bought at The Great Scale Model Train Show in Timonium, Md. in winter of 2019.  Once I got it home it just looked too clean running on my layout.  So I made it my first locomotive weathering project.  Now it looks like she been working hard for living unprotected from the elements for decades.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend everyone!   Be safe = Be well!

A5 brings a short freight across the bridge early in the morning.  Looks like we have some beach goer diehards in the lake below.

MOW workers are too busy to even notice the old tea kettle trundling by.  For them it's just another day working on the railroad. IMG_6294

Somehow the A5 is right at home within the majesty of the mountains. IMG_6288

Just got back from running some trains and I see this?  I love early starts! Great photos so far everyone.  Are Gp-38s and RS-1s considered switchers? On my pike they are! Moreover, on my pike, the DMI&R runs with the LIRR -

You have to love the speed control of DCS. Here is a short video of this 20 year old DMIR  ps2 diesel flawlessly leading a consist with a dummy engine and a new LIRR PS3, all going at 15 scale miles per hour (forgive the fingers in the camera, lol!) -

Lionel’s Legacy 4-6-0 Ten-wheeler locomotive models have gotten to be my favorite steam engines. I like the fact that they are relatively small, so they fit well on my 10’-by-5’ layout. They also were most numerous during the early 20th Century, an era in which I'm interested, and are a good match for MTH wood-sided passenger cars – another of my favorites.

Yay SWSat (Wot Starts on Friday) is on!

I see we are off to a good start. To run the risk of being against @jhz563 I’m going to include some 2 rail O scale into the mix this AM. Us very few, amongst the larger but still few have to stand up for ourselves some times.

Here are a few 2 rail O scale Switcher items for this week. First up is the natural habitat of a switcher. The Hoboken freight yard on the NYSME layout from an unusual drone vantage point.

Last up is the nicely restored Cornell a Lehigh Valley tug boat (or “water switcher”). I took this a few summers ago when it was tied up downtown near Tribeca.

Good morning SwSat fans!  Today your Yardmaster decided to go down to the B&M right of way to check the status of the motive power on the Blueberry Special.  There’s finally a nip in the air in MA after above average temperatures in Sept, so he replaced his shorts and T shirt for long pants and a jacket.

He found B&M has replaced the leased NH RS3 with a new RS3 of their own, no. 1509.  B&M management knew leasing a nearly new RS3 for $1.00/day could’t last forever!

@coach joe posted:

Rich I seem to remember a small shelf type layout back when you were publishing SWSAT.  My how that layout has grown.

Hey Joe, you have a good memory!

Here's the progression: first I did the workbench shelf at my old house, ~2008

to building this ~2011:

Then "Boo" (kid 2) and I built this ~2015, but we didn't keep it for very long, we only used it a handful of times and it kept getting in the way (storage issue):

Then we moved from Maryland to Virginia ~5 years ago, version 1 of the layout here:

To now finally this:
