Happy Switcher Saturday everyone!

Today, SILVER LAKE and I are co-hosting/pitch- hitting for (Rich) MURNANE who is off doing important family duties.

If you missed last week's posts, they can be found here:

Here is a poem to get us going.

Switcher Saturday is on track!
Another week of posting your locos is back.

Tri-power, clean, greasy, grimy and anything in-between,
Extra points for heaven for those that go with PRR steam!

Seriously, get your switchers out of their roundhouse bay,
Join us for another awesome Switcher Saturday!

My contributions are from my last layout, as my #228 navigates my Gargraves switches and another one resting against my none-semi-scale coal bumper.

Tom

Hi Everybody.Happy SWSat!

So far I'm not pulling my weight this morning.  Amazingly my kids let me sleep in this AM. So thanks for getting things rolling Tom.

This week I am posting some pics of my repainted Lionel Postwar 520 Boxcab switcher. Many people may not realize that it is in fact based on an actual,  albeit obscure engine built by GE for a Chilean Mining Company. Here is the builders photo.

As far as the new black and yellow look I've started to paint it I think in it would fit right in to Bob CNJ 3676's switching scenario once it is done. Also taking the pics brings out all of the flaws I definitely have to revisit this one. imageimageimageimageimage

I found a couple other very early GE switcher images that seem interesting the first is a pair of Battery engines that worked for Davidson Chemical Co.

This one is a Buffalo and Lockport Railway steeplecab. image

One of the most exceptional pieces of modeling I've seen in any scale is Mr. Vince Lee's HO replica of the Erie's 28th Street terminal. Posted here are pictures along with a track diagram of the model. The layout offers everything anyone could want from a switching perspective and, for those of us with an interest in New York City transportation history, it gives us a tangible peek into the past. Mr. Lee's layout is a true gem and this  represents perhaps the most enjoyable post I've ever made on the forum.

Enjoy,

Bob

Bob,

Mr. Lee has a great looking layout. Very realistic looking with great looking structures.

Andy/ Silver Lake, Nice looking loco. I would assume the coupler would swing out further since as it shows now the cowcatcher seems to be interfering with coupling. On second look, maybe it has a standard coupler, but with some sort of link and pin-type adaptor.

Tom

Great pics so far guys. This continues to be one of my favorite spots on the forum.

Interesting catch Tom. Interesting. I think there was quite a bit of this sort of adaptation involved with small lines. I know that many logging lines had several coupler pocket slots at different heights for different adaptations. I'm sure it was a lot of work to deal with transition.

I caught MTA work engine 77 last weekend at Brooklyn Borough Hall. It was working on the 2/3 line and really slowed my trip home from visiting a friend.

This next bit may be interesting to Bob CNJ 3676.  I then took the 4 up to the Bronx to walk home across the Harlem River. Erie 149 St Terminal is supposed to be turned into a park  . The transfer crane is still there and will be preserved and you can see where the float bridge was is now blocked in by the Oak Point Transfer track. imageimage

I tried to match the angle of the vintage pic and didn't quite get it. In the vintage image the left leg of the transfer crane just sneaks in on the far right side. image

The above image is the reverse angle from the Bronx Terminal Market park. imageHere is another one from the bridge. Below is a map just to the left of the R in Erie is where the transfer crane is. image

On the other side of 149 st the Lehigh Valley terminal has a good bit left of thier former site but it is much altered and maybe hard to recognize. I'll compile this at a later time. Most of that site is undergoing a big change and will be gone in the next few years to development.

Andy/ Silver Lake,

Thanks for the comment on my old Peekskill switching layout. Several years ago Greg McMurray of the OGR Forum had a Lehigh Valley boxcar (aka The Traveling Boxcar) that forum members would ship back and forth across the country with little tidbits collected on route. It was lots of fun to be involved. At the time my wife worked in a Copy Shop/Shipping Store, so the shipping part for me at least was pretty convenient.

Here are the 2 links which represented my involvement and has some other pictures. I painted those clouds all by myself! Maybe you should hire me for set design!

Great Pictures Guys!  Thanks for running the show Tom/Andy!

this is me next to a freshly painted 25Tonner at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum in Long Island NY earlier today. If you look closely you'll see that my left arm and orange shirt have some black paint on them, I was so excited to get a picture I didn't notice the fresh paint!  Yes, I'm a knucklehead!

Tom and Andy are going to continue to be in charge here this week and next as I Have to travel again next week too!

All the best....Rich

Very nice Rich! I'm glad you got to go check them out. Nothing like that fresh out of the box/newly painted look for us toy train guys

Now you can save the shirt and add it to the"  Railroadinia items in your collection" forum topic.

Two 25 tonners = One 50 tonner if my math works out, right?

25 tons seems smal but it is still more than I can move

Have a good visit with your fam.

Hello fellow SSWAT friends!  Sorry I was missing in action on Saturday.  I was out of town since Friday teaching in a remote area of NC where there was no cell or internet reception.  It's nice to get away from the "real world", however, this past Saturday morning was not the same without Switcher Saturday!

So here is a late post from The Free State Junction Railway's ready track.   Have a great week everyone and Rich enjoy your time with your family!!IMG_0958
